stros pitcher Josh Hader (71) celebrates defeating the Miami Marlins

3 Trade Destinations for Josh Hader at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline

Every July, contenders search for one move that can separate them from the rest of the playoff field.

Sometimes it’s a frontline starter.

Sometimes it’s a middle-of-the-order bat.

But championship teams understand that October is often won in the bullpen.

That’s why Josh Hader would immediately become one of the most valuable players available if the Astros decided to listen to offers.

To be clear, Houston has little incentive to move him. Hader remains under contract beyond 2026, continues to pitch at an elite level, and gives the Astros one of baseball’s premier late-inning weapons. League insiders still view a trade as unlikely, but with Houston fighting to remain in contention and the deadline approaching, rival executives will undoubtedly make calls.

Unlike rental relievers, Hader offers something far more valuable: certainty. Any acquiring team would control one of baseball’s best closers for multiple postseason runs, dramatically increasing his trade value.

If Houston were to entertain offers, here’s where the conversations should begin.

1. Chicago Cubs

The Cubs make the most sense.

Chicago has emerged as one of the National League’s top contenders, but Jed Hoyer knows postseason baseball often comes down to bullpen depth.

Craig Counsell also knows Hader as well as anyone in baseball after managing him during his peak years in Milwaukee. There would be virtually no adjustment period. Hader could immediately reclaim the ninth inning while allowing every other reliever to slide into more natural roles.

Because Hader has years of club control remaining, Houston would ask for a significant return.

Proposed Trade

Cubs receive

  • Josh Hader

Astros receive

  • SS Jefferson Rojas
  • RHP Jaxon Wiggins
  • OF Brett Bateman

Rojas gives Houston a potential everyday middle infielder with advanced offensive skills.

Wiggins possesses the power arsenal to develop into a mid-rotation starter.

Bateman provides athleticism, speed, and on-base ability in center field.

It’s a steep price—but controllable elite closers rarely become available.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers

If an elite pitcher hits the market, the Dodgers almost always pick up the phone.

Andrew Friedman has consistently shown a willingness to leverage organizational depth to improve the major league roster without dismantling the farm system.

Adding Hader would give Los Angeles arguably the deepest bullpen in baseball and another proven October weapon capable of finishing games against the league’s best offenses.

Proposed Trade

Dodgers receive

  • Josh Hader

Astros receive

  • OF Eduardo Quintero
  • RHP Patrick Copen
  • OF Zyhir Hope

Houston receives one of the Dodgers’ best young outfield prospects in Hope, a rapidly improving bat in Quintero, and a high-upside arm in Copen.

For Los Angeles, surrendering prospect depth is a reasonable price for acquiring one of baseball’s elite closers through 2028.

3. Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies second half of the season could go many different ways and a plan is needed to remain on track.

Few executives are more aggressive at the trade deadline than Dave Dombrowski.

The Phillies are built to win now.

Their lineup remains among the National League’s most dangerous, and their rotation is capable of matching any contender’s. But adding Hader would give Rob Thomson a true lockdown closer for multiple pennant races.

Philadelphia’s farm system isn’t as deep as Chicago’s or Los Angeles’, meaning Houston would likely focus on quality over quantity.

Proposed Trade

Phillies receive

  • Josh Hader

Astros receive

  • RHP Jean Cabrera
  • OF Dante Nori
  • RHP Alex McFarlane

Jean Cabrera has developed into one of Philadelphia’s top pitching prospects and would headline the return.

Dante Nori brings premium athleticism and long-term upside in center field.

McFarlane has climbed the Phillies’ prospect rankings after an excellent season and gives Houston another power arm with bullpen upside.

It’s the type of package that reflects both Hader’s value and the current state of Philadelphia’s farm system.

Why Josh Hader Would Command a Massive Return

This isn’t Aroldis Chapman.

It isn’t a two-month rental.

Hader is one of the game’s elite closers with multiple years remaining on his contract.

That changes everything.

Houston wouldn’t move him simply to save money.

The Astros would demand players capable of contributing for years, likely including at least one Top-100-caliber prospect and multiple additional high-upside pieces.

That’s why only a handful of organizations realistically have both the motivation and prospect capital to complete a deal.

The Last Word

Will Josh Hader actually be traded?

Probably not.

The Astros remain far more likely to keep one of baseball’s best relievers than move him.

But if Houston unexpectedly opens the door, expect virtually every contender to call.

The Cubs have the farm system.

The Dodgers have the organizational depth.

The Phillies have the championship urgency.

For an elite closer with multiple years of control, there may not be a more valuable bullpen arm available anywhere in baseball.
