Miami Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards tags out Atlanta Braves catcher Drake Baldwin during the first inning at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, on May 18, 2026.

Atlanta Braves Can’t Catch a Break When It Comes to Injuries

The Atlanta Braves cannot catch a break when it comes to injuries, as another player has landed on the injured list. According to a team announcement on X, catcher Drake Baldwin was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique muscle.

Baldwin, 25, has performed to an MVP level this season and has been one of the Atlanta Braves’ best run producers (38 RBI), with first baseman Matt Olson (38 RBI) also proving to be elite this season. In 48 games, Baldwin is hitting .303 with a .932 OPS and 13 home runs.

Baldwin landing on the injured list comes on the heels of catcher Sean Murphy also being placed on the IL on May 12 with a fractured left middle finger. Among the shock of Baldwin missing some time, the Braves also had a flurry of other roster moves made, which included reinstating left-hander Dylan Dodd from the IL.

Additionally, the Braves announced that right-hander JR Ritchie was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett following his poor performance against the Miami Marlins. Ritchie allowed six earned runs on six hits in four innings. To take Ritchie’s place on the roster, the Atlanta Braves have recalled right-hander Victor Mederos

The final move made by the Braves was releasing left-hander Aaron Bummer, who had failed to put together a solid season. In 19 appearances, Bummer went 1-1 with a 7.63 ERA.

The Atlanta Braves Will Be One Team Looking for Catching Depth at the Trade Deadline

The Braves will be one team looking for catching depth at the August 3 trade deadline, with Murphy having his second injury of the season. At the moment, the Braves will be relying on veteran catcher Sandy Leon and Chadwick Tromp, who was among those called up to replace Baldwin.

The Braves signed Leon as a free agent on May 12 when Murphy went down after playing in an independent league in Mexico. In four games since joining the Braves, Leon has two hits in eight at-bats. Tromp had been cold while at Gwinnett, hitting .169 with a .578 OPS in 24 games.
