Atlanta Braves Call up 25-Year-Old Inf To Replace Outfielder

The Atlanta Braves roster has been in a constant state of flux, as injuries have hit the roster hard to begin the year. Thankfully for the Braves, they’re the healthiest they’ve been all season.

The Braves got back right-handers Spencer Strider and Raisel Iglesias during their series with the Colorado Rockies and catcher Sean Murphy while playing the Seattle Mariners. The one area on the roster that the Braves have struggled with this season is finding bench depth. With outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. on the injured list (Grade 1 left hamstring strain), the Braves’ bench will come more into play.

According to a team announcement on X on Wednesday, the Braves have selected the contract of infielder Jim Jarvis, while they designated outfielder Jose Azocar for assignment. Azocar only had a cup of coffee with the Braves, striking out in two at-bats.

Jarvis, 25, has never played in the major leagues and was an original draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in the 11th round of the 2023 draft. The Braves acquired Jarvis at the trade deadline last season for right-hander Rafael Montero

Jarvis has been doing well while at Triple-A Gwinnett this season, hitting .305 with a .863 OPS and four home runs. Jarvis has also shown great plate discipline, walking (23) just as much as he struck out (27). The native Californian (San Diego) also has decent speed, stealing 15 bags, while getting caught twice. A natural infielder, Jarvis will not offer manager Walt Weiss another outfielder.

How Weiss will manage the Braves’ infield and outfield with Acuna down will be interesting, as infielder Kyle Farmer has struggled to compete for consistent playing time. Farmer has only played in eight games this season, but has done well, hitting .333 with a .724 OPS.

The Braves have used infielder Jorge Mateo to fill in as the backup infielder, as second baseman Ozzie Albies, first baseman Matt Olson and third baseman Austin Riley play every day. With infielder Ha-Seong Kim soon returning (torn tendon in right middle finger), Jarvis or Farmer could find themselves optioned (Jarvis) or designated for assignment (Farmer).
