One issue the Baltimore Orioles keep running into with their lineup is a lack of production from their outfield players. The good news is that outfield prospect Ike Irish‘s performance might offer a long-term solution within the next two years for the team’s continuing struggles in the deepest part of the ballpark.
Irish, drafted in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft, made the jump to High-A in 2026 and is performing well enough to warrant a serious look. The 22-year-old is offering production at the outfield position that the team has struggled with until this year, with the Taylor Ward trade having a huge impact so far this season. It might also help them wash out the pain of Heston Kjerstad being unable to find his footing in the major leagues.
Ike Irish’s Performance Signals a Potential Star in Orioles Outfield
Irish, after being drafted in 2025, posted a .230/.297/.594 slash line with a single home run and 12 RBI. He struggled to a 25% strikeout rate and only garnered six walks in 74 at-bats. Scouts loved his ability to produce at the plate, including his pop at the plate, slugging 27 home runs over two years.
The Orioles have let Irish, who moved from catcher to the outfield, develop his own approach at the plate, including being left-eye dominant. Instead of changing it, Baltimore let him keep that tool in his profile and adjust to it at the professional level.

βMy body moves in a way that I like the ball deepening up on me, and I have comfort in that,β Irish told MASN earlier this year. βAnd then I just use my hands to flick it the other way.”
Through Irish’s first 17 games, he’s improved his slash line to .317/.423/.956 and clubbed three home runs. He’s also stealing more, succeeding seven times out of nine base-stealing attempts this year. That also goes for his walk rate, which is estimated at 14% as his strikeout rate remained the same.
Irish stands to work on his approach somewhat with left-handed pitchers, losing 70 batting average points and drawing a lower walk rate. He also could do better in scoring situations with two outs, hitting only .167 in 13 opportunities.
How Would Irish Change the O’s Outfield?
Outside of Ward, the Orioles’ outfielder corps at the major league level is lackluster, with the rest of the players in that position posting a cumulative negative WAR.
Tyler O’Neill, who struggled immensely last year, is also not finding his footing early on, hitting an unimpressive .216/.310/.607. Dylan Beavers, one of their top outfield prospect who debuted last year, is also holding an OPS under .700, alongside Colton Cowser, who has a .511 OPS. Leody Taveras, one of the veterans on the team, is their best hitter behind Ward with a nearly 1:1 walk-to-strikeout ratio and .841 OPS.
Colton Cowser has been out of Orioles’ lineup 4 straight games, against 2 RHPs and 2 LHPs.
Manager Craig Albernaz: “To me, it’s nothing about Cowser. It’s how Leody has been playing and also how Beavers has been playing as well. I think Cowser is trending the right way.”

Losing Cedric Mullins‘ productivity after last year’s trade remains painful for the team, alongside the lack of immediate production from their prospects. They had some good players over the last few years, including Austin Hays and Trey Mancini, but it’s not good enough to compete in a competitive division like the American League East.
Irish’s development comes down to his ability to hit left-handed batting better and to develop his raw power. He’s only 22 now, so he has time to continue refining his swing and even gain some gap power if he increases his bat speed. His stealing ability, if he maintains it, would also be a plus, since Gunnar Henderson and Blaze Alexander are the only players with more than one stolen base.
Irish does not have the tools to be the next all-around superstar, but he’s got enough to pair up with Nate George in the future. He also won’t make his debut this year, but could appear in 2027 if the team needs an offensive boost.
