Cody Bellinger Re-Signs with the Yankees

Outfielder Cody Bellinger and the New York Yankees are in agreement on a five year, $162.5M contract, according to sources. Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the deal.

Bellinger, 30, enjoyed a remarkable resurgent season in 2025 after his trade to New York in December 2024. The former MVP, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs along with cash considerations for right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet. He provided the Yankees with an impactful left-handed bat and defensive versatility.

Bellinger ultimately delivered on his promise by hitting 29 home runs, driving in 98 RBIs, and posting a .272 batting average with an .814 OPS across 152 games. He primarily played left field and center field. This strong performance, which was his best since his 2019 MVP season, immediately paid dividends for the Yankees and led to him opting out of his contract to re-enter free agency seeking a long-term deal. The Yankees now give him that long term deal.

Bellinger’s Season in New York

Bellinger’s 2025 campaign wasn’t just about the numbers — it was about reliability. After years of volatility, he provided the Yankees with a consistent middle-of-the-order presence that took the pressure off Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. His 98 RBIs were a testament to his improved two-strike approach. Unlike the “all-or-nothing” swing of his late Dodgers tenure, Bellinger utilized a shortened stroke to drive runners home, making him the team’s most dangerous hitter with runners in scoring position, highlighted with his effective two strike approach. Another thing that makes this marriage a match made in heaven is how well Yankee Stadium fits Bellinger and his swing. Many of his 29 home runs were line drives that would have been flyouts elsewhere, proving the fit was stylistically perfect.

Bellinger’s Defensive Masterclass

Perhaps more valuable than his bat was his defensive utility. Bellinger’s ability to switch between center field and left field — and even fill in at first base — gave the Yankees unprecedented tactical flexibility. He provided Gold Glove-caliber defense in center, allowing the team to rotate veteran players through the DH spot to keep them fresh. With Trent Grisham patrolling center for the majority of the 2025 season, and the 2026 season to come, Bellinger will be in left. His range in the cavernous left-field Death Valley at Yankee Stadium saved countless runs, endearingly him to a pitching staff that had struggled with outfield defense in previous seasons.

Adding Bellinger back makes the Yankees a much better team then they were prior. Now their focus moves to pitching — both the starting rotation and their bullpen.
