The Detroit Tigers’ bullpen hit its stride over the past month, posting a remarkable 2.98 ERA in August. That is the second-best mark in MLB during that span. Detroit’s reliever corps seems to have found some stability as the postseason approaches. Much of the praise for the Tigers’ improved pen can be directed at trade deadline acquisition Kyle Finnegan, who still has yet to give up a run through 12 appearances with Detroit. The former Washington Nationals closer has been an unstoppable force since joining the Tigers. But there’s another unsung hero who has quietly and effectively dominated out of Detroit’s pen in recent weeks — Troy Melton.
Troy Melton Emerging as Tigers’ Middle-Innings Savior
A 2022 fourth-round draft pick of the Tigers, Detroit decided to call up the right-hander in July amid injuries and inconsistencies from the team’s pitching staff. Melton started in his first two appearances, which proved to be a tale of two vastly different outings.
The 24-year-old had a rough start to his career, allowing six runs on seven hits to the Pittsburgh Pirates in his big league debut on July 23. That bump in the road proved to be the only time he needed to acclimate to the bigs, though. In his next start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Melton flashed signs of stardom. He dominated to the tune of seven shutout innings, giving Detroit a glimpse of what he can provide for the future.

Melton moved to the bullpen once the Tigers made moves for experienced starters in Chris Paddack and Charlie Morton. But the right-hander has only continued to impress as Detroit’s middle-innings reliever. Despite only having 10 career games under his belt, Melton has been one of baseball’s hottest pitchers since late July.
Melton Providing Much-Needed Stability in Bullpen
The Tigers’ impressive bullpen numbers of late may not show it, but the team isn’t exactly loaded with trustworthy relievers. Outside of Finnegan, Detroit’s newly acquired arms have left plenty to be desired. Melton has proven to be the solution for a team that failed to bring in reliable reinforcements for the stretch run.
The California native was nearly untouchable in August. In seven contests, six of them bullpen outings, Melton allowed just two earned runs, both of them homers, in 17 1/3 innings. He notched more strikeouts (13) than hits allowed (9) while finishing the month with a team-low 1.04 ERA. Melton added another 2 2/3 innings without an earned run against the New York Mets on September 1, bringing his season ERA down to just 2.25.
The Tigers’ front office showed trust in their in-house talent after deciding against a true deadline day splash. That decision could ultimately come back to bite a team searching for its first World Series title since 1984. However, without that trust, Detroit may have overlooked what the franchise has discovered in Melton. With only 32.0 innings pitched, his career is just beginning. But the Tigers may have found the man to anchor their bullpen for years to come.
