Seranthony Dominguez could be a major bullpen target for the Blue Jays to retain this offseason.

Blue Jays Seeking Pitching Help as Deadline Nears

The 2025 MLB Trade Deadline is almost here, and the Toronto Blue Jays are looking to boost their roster with pitching help. On Tuesday, Toronto acquired Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles to amplify their bullpen with a high-leverage back-end reliever.

This is helpful, as Yimi Garcia continues to rehab his injury. Additionally, Chad Green had been going through struggles and was recently designated for assignment.

With Yimi Garcia still recovering from injury, the Blue Jays should prioritize adding bullpen help at the deadline.

Blue Jays’ Quest for Success Lies in Adding Bullpen Help at Deadline

The Blue Jays are looking to win the American League East this season, and they can’t afford to have pitchers struggle down the stretch. The addition of Dominguez should be a huge help but they still need to add some more pitching.

The Blue Jays’ necessities for the deadline are picking up both starters and relievers. They currently have José Berríos, Kevin Gausman, and Chris Bassitt anchoring the rotation. But on the back end, they have had to use nine different pitchers to fill the remaining two spots. Eric Lauer has been a pleasant addition to the rotation. Across his 10 starts, he has a 2.61 ERA.

Toronto ranks seventh in the majors in bullpen ERA (3.66). But unfortunately, closer Jeff Hoffman hasn’t exactly been lights-out dominant. He needs a solid backup reliever who will set him up nicely in the pen. But the Blue Jays could do some more shuffling by moving Hoffman out of the closer role. Overall, the Blue Jays are in a solid position to make moves to upgrade the pitching at the deadline, which they have already started with Dominguez.

Some pitchers, some notable and some under the radar, that could help solidify the Blue Jays staff are Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera, Cleveland Guardians reliever Emmanuel Clase, Kansas City Royals right-hander Seth Lugo. and Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar. Both Clase and Bednar would be great options, considering Hoffman has showcased some struggles this season. The Blue Jays could move Hoffman out of the closer role into a set-up man position if they did acquire a closer.
