Report: Dodgers Call Up Outfielder Esteury Ruiz After Max Muncy Injury

UPDATE: Muncy told reporters he expects to miss at least six weeks with a bone bruise in his left knee, but testing revealed no structural damage.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City as they wait for results on Max Muncy‘s knee injury, according to John Heyman of The New York Post. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters last night that they “hope” Muncy’s injury is a sprain. He added that they “were optimistic after initial tests. “Regardless, it looks like a significant injury and Muncy will miss at least a month. The Dodgers third baseman sustained the injury when Michael A. Taylor was caught stealing in the sixth inning.

The Bespectacled Beast

This injury comes at a time when Muncy has been an offensive tour de force for the Dodgers. The left-handed hitting slugger struggled mightily for more than a month into the season. His batting average hovered below .2oo with just one homer. However, after donning glasses, Muncy has hit a blistering .291 with 12 homers and a slugging percentage of over .900. He has made it his business to torment left-handed pitching as well. His prolific production has come at a time when the first three in the Los Angeles batting order have hit for a .220 average in recent weeks.

Base-stealing Fiend

The Dodgers acquired Esteury Ruiz early this season after the Athletics designated the outfielder for assignment. The 26-year-old had poor offensive numbers in the Majors last season with an OPS in the .600s. This was just after he acquired the stolen base crown in 2023, when he stole 67 bases. There have been signs of life at Triple-A Oklahoma City, where Ruiz is hitting .291 with eight home runs, and as speed never slumps, 38 stolen bases. It remains to be seen whether he can carry that level of success in the big leagues.

Filling The Gap

The Dodgers have plenty of offensive firepower in their lineup. The question is, will they be able to pick up the slack that Muncy has so ably carried this last month?
