A determined season is coming for Arizona Diamondbacks Lourdes Gurriel Jr. He wants to avoid a prolonged slump like last season and be more consistent with his bat. He also wants to stay healthy and contribute as this team once again seeks a playoff spot.
2024 Started Well
Last season started well for Gurriel. He had eight hits in the first four games, including three home runs, two doubles, and 10 RBIs. He was the team’s most reliable player on both offense and defense through the Diamondbacks’ first 20 games.
Then Came a Slump
However, from around the last week of April to the end of May, a total of 26 games, Gurriel ran into an extended slump. He only had 17 hits in 101 at-bats—a .161 average. That same time frame saw him strike out 23 times. He never looked comfortable at the plate.
He recovered only to later end up placed on the IL during a crucial time. A left calf strain kept him from playing September 2 to September 20. During that time, the team saw its Wild Card lead slip. They ended up missing the playoffs by one game.
Gold Glove for 2025
This is a determined season for Lourdes Gurriel, and he has some goals. One goal includes winning a Gold Glove. He was a finalist last season and wants to win one this season. With guidance and teaching from Dave McKay, Gurriel has shown he can cover ground quickly and convert difficult plays into outs. He also has displayed a vastly improved throwing arm.
More Days Off
Speaking of his wellbeing, many wondered if he was playing sore throughout the season. Doing that could have contributed to the slump and his later injury. Whether or not true, during Spring Training Manager Torey Lovullo did mention wanting to give Gurriel more time off this season.
Critical Decision
A determined season for Lourdes Gurriel will be needed as after this season, he has a choice to make. He must decide whether or not to opt out of his contract and enter free agency. That could be a big gamble. Gurriel turns 33 in October, and this will likely be his final contract.
If he Stays
If he stays with Arizona, Gurriel is guaranteed $13 million for 2026. There is also a potential team option for 2027, which could be worth $14 million. However, the team could buy him out for $5 million.
Motivation
He reported in camp that he had a healthy offseason and is ready to play. While the motivation to get his last big payday or even his options picked up could be enough for him to have an excellent season, he wants more. Gurriel is determined to have a solid season to help lead the Diamondbacks back to the playoffs. Everything else would be a bonus.
