The Cardinals have DFA'd Erick Fedde amid his struggles this season.

Report: Cardinals Open to Trading Top Starter Erick Fedde

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly open to trading right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde. According to a report from Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, rival clubs believe the organization wants to reduce payroll and develop its younger pitching. After a strong year and having signed a team-friendly deal, Fedde could be on the move before the season begins.

Cardinals Reportedly Open to Trading Erick Fedde

Fedde, whom the Cardinals acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the trade that sent Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech to the Los Angeles Dodgers, could soon be on the move again. After pitching to a 3.72 ERA in 55 2/3 innings with the Cardinals, his time with the club could be in jeopardy as they look to develop their younger pitching at the MLB level. Young arms Michael McGreevy and André Pallante could slot in if the team deals Fedde at some point this season. Other top prospects like Tink Hence, Quinn Mathews, and Tekoah Roby could see time in the majors if the Cardinals look to get younger in their rotation.

The Cardinals have also prioritized lowering their payroll this offseason by letting Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew Kittredge walk, shopping Nolan Arenado, and avoiding major league free-agent signings. With Fedde owed $7.5 million for one more year, they may look to move him and reallocate funds to help them compete in 2026 and beyond.

Who Might Be Interested

Fedde, with a team-friendly contract and solid stats, could attract interest if the Cardinals shop him during spring training. The first major pitching injury of the spring occurred when the New York Mets shut down Frankie Montas for 6–8 weeks with a high-grade lat strain. Although the team came out and said they’re not in the market for another arm, it’s hard to imagine they won’t consider a move for Fedde if he is available at the right price. As spring progresses, other pitching injuries could make Fedde a sought-after rental. The Cardinals might also trade him at the deadline, with contenders looking to add depth for a postseason run.
