Last season, the Toronto Blue Jays leadoff hitter was primarily George Springer, but they may need a change. According to Sportsnet Shi Davidi, Blue Jays manager John Schneider isn’t set on handing off the role to Springer. Springer was the leadoff hitter for most games with a combination of some games from Spencer Horwitz, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Bo Bichette. While the Blue Jays have options of players in their current system that they could use, they would also benefit by adding a bat via trade.
Impactful Leadoff Hitter Essential for Blue Jays Lineup
A player who will provide impact as a solid leadoff hitter while also possessing solid speed, good contact with the ball, and skills on the bases. Springer has been the Blue Jays leadoff hitter for the past four seasons. Last season for the Blue Jays, Springer’s offense was flat hitting (.220/.303/.371). While we’re expecting to see a rebound season from Springer, it’s always good to have options. Especially if Springer showcases any similar struggles this season. If the Blue Jays want to shake up the lineup and offense, moving players in the batting order seems the most logical.

Leadoff Hitter Options For Blue Jays
He may have only made his debut last season for the Blue Jays. But Will Wagner has demonstrated a strong ability of being a promising leadoff hitter. Wagner sported a .788 OPS across 24 games with the Blue Jays last season. He also hit two home runs, collected 25 hits, 11 RBIs, and six doubles with a .305 batting average. He could be an impactful rookie who has showcased solid offense to place at the top of the lineup.
Another option would be the off-season power-hitting signing of Anthony Santander. What’s ideal about having Santander hit first is that since he is a switch-hitter, he can produce power from both sides of the plate. Then having Guerrero bat behind him would combine for a boosted offense. For the past three consecutive seasons, Guerrero and Santander have combined for 193 home runs. Santander would also be beneficial at the top of the order as it would put pressure on the pitcher to perform well against the bottom of the order to prevent Santander from hitting with players on base. He would provide the weapon of getting in the way of the pitcher’s rhythm.
Another option would be offseason defensive key addition Andrés Giménez, who has solid speed on the bases. He’s quick on his feet and ranked in the 89th percentile in sprint speed (28.9 mph), according to Baseball Savant. The Blue Jays would have the advantage of having a base-stealing threat in the leadoff spot. The 26-year-old has elite speed, with stolen 30 bases for the Cleveland Guardians last season. But ideally, it would be whoever the Blue Jays choose as leadoff hitter, as long as Vlad, Santander, and Bo get as many bats as possible to sustain offense. Over the past week, there have been rumors of the Blue Jays acquiring Chicago White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr. and, in return, trading three prospects. Robert Jr. would add another power bat to the Blue Jays lineup who also has good speed.
