Blue Jays Outfielder Is Looking Like A New Player

The 2024 season has brought a new, improved, and confident Daulton Varsho. Varsho’s offense has been great, and his contact has been strong. He’s been doing a significant amount of damage, especially recently. Varsho is looking like a different hitter, and you can even notice that Varsho’s stance at the plate is looking different. Evidently, it has helped, and he’s looking and playing confidently, and it’s exactly what the Blue Jays need.

All Aboard The Varsho Train

He hit a triple in the 9-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday and then made the Tigers pay on Thursday evening when he hit a homer off of a slider for a two-run home run. It is encouraging to have Varsho step up this season, as the Blue Jays need their core to perform well and succeed. When the Blue Jays core is hitting well the Blue Jays look sharp and win games. Last season, we didn’t see as much offensive action from Varsho as this season. Varsho didn’t hit his 9th home run until Game 57 last season. Varsho has gone yard 9 times and is slugging a career-best .461 in 47 games this season.

While Varsho’s defense was top-notch he received criticism from fans from his lack of offense. Well now those critics can be silenced as Varsho has been looking quite comfortable at the plate. Everyone wanted the Varsho that came from the Diamondbacks. Now we are seeing that Varsho and he’s been one of the Blue Jays best players offensively. But Varsho’s consistency in defense continues this season as he has a DRS of 13 in 46 games. As well, the Blue Jays core has also been playing better and we’ve seen action from Bo Bichette, Danny Jansen, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Varsho And The Blue Jays

The Blue Jays issues with RISP has certainly improved this season. When the Blue Jays faced the White Sox on Wednesday the Blue Jays scored multiple runs in an inning with two outs. This is something we didn’t see a lot of last season and is certainly a good sign. The Blue Jays certainly have their work cut out for them as they are last in the AL East. But with the AL East being a tight race, the Blue Jays can certainly work their way up in the standings if they can continue to be consistent and produce offensively.

Winning series will be very important for the Blue Jays and if the core can continue to shine brightly in terms of production the Blue Jays can hustle their way up in the standings. Seems like a good time to note also note that Varsho is on pace for a 6 fWAR/8 bWAR season. Varsho finding his power again this season has been fun to watch. He is certainly deserving of it as he is the type of player that hustles and plays with urgency. Despite a down season in 2023 Varsho still stood out despite not having his full power capacity as we have seen this season.
