Astros Place Yuli Gurriel On Injured List

The Houston Astros offensive depth is going to be tested for the next week or so. Houston has placed first baseman Yuli Gurriel on the 10-day Injured List due to neck stiffness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The move is retroactive to Tuesday, August 3rd, so he is eligible to return on the 13th. Gurriel sat out during the Astros’ recent exciting two-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 37-year old also missed the first game of the series against the Minnesota Twins. Houston decided it would be best to place Gurriel on the Injured List.

Before being placed on the Injured List, Gurriel was putting up fantastic numbers. In 99 games, the veteran had a team-leading 117 hits. He’s slashing .324/.388/.490 in 2021.

Corresponding Moves

Houston also made the decision to option Robel Garcia to Triple-A Sugar Land. The infielder is hitless in his last 12 at-bats with five strikeouts. Overall, Garcia is hitting .151 in 106 at-bats.

The Astros called up two position players in corresponding moves: Taylor Jones and Jacob Wilson. Jones has been up and down between the Minors and the Majors all season. In 62 plate appearances at the Major League level, Jones is hitting .175 with three doubles. Wilson was just claimed off waivers from the Oakland Athletics on Monday, Aug. 2nd. The 31-year old rookie has one hit in seven at-bats this season.

Other Injury News

In other Astros injury news, Alex Bregman is slated to start in another rehab assignment Friday. Bregman had a minor hamstring issue earlier in the week, which forced him to miss some time, but the 27 year old is back on the path to a return.

Jose Urquidy is beginning to ramp up his workload off the mound, so he’s not far from facing live batters. After he faces live batters, he should progress to a rehab assignment. His return may still be a ways off however.
