The votes are in and the LWOB fans have spoken. Some of the races were very close with the winning player earning the victory by just a few votes. If there is to be an All-Star Game played this year, the hope is that the lineups look very similar to these. So, here it is the 2020 MLB All-Star Game Starters.
American League
First Base – Matt Olson, Oakland Athletics
2019 Stats: BA: .267 RBI: 91 HR: 36
Gold Glove Award winner the past two seasons. Matt Olson’s steady defense and power hitting has made him a fan favorite in his short Oakland Athletics career.
Second Base – DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees
2019 Stats: BA: .327 RBI: 102 HR: 26
DJ LeMahieu had his best season last year and was arguably the biggest free-agent steal of 2019. He became the New York Yankees most consistent and versatile player.
Third Base – Anthony Rendon, Los Angeles Angels
2019 Stats: BA: .319 RBI: 126 HR: 34
Washington Nationals 2019 World Series hero Anthony Rendon signed a seven-year, $245 million dollar free agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels. One of the best hitters in the National League, he will now look to make his mark in the American League.
Shortstop – Francisco Lindor, Cleveland Indians
2019 Stats: BA: .284 RBI: 74 HR: 32
An All-Star each of the past four seasons, Francisco Lindor is the current topic of multiple trade rumors. Whichever team he plays for in the future, be it the Cleveland Indians or not, will no doubt inherit a superstar.
Catcher – Yasmani Grandal, Chicago White Sox
2019 Stats: BA: .246 RBI: 77 HR: 28
Yasmani Grandal signed a four-year, $73 million dollar free-agent contract with the Chicago White Sox in the offseason. One of the most patient hitters in the National League, Grandal joins a Sox team looking to make a big move in 2020.
Left Field – Joey Gallo, Texas Rangers
2019 Stats: BA: .253 RBI: 49 HR: 22
Joey Gallo was limited to only 70 games for the Texas Rangers in 2019 due to oblique and wrist injuries. Still managed to become second fastest in American League history to reach 100 home runs.
Center Field – Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels
2019 Stats: BA: .291 RBI: 104 HR: 45
Mike Trout, the reigning 2019 MVP, signed a record 12-year, $426 million dollar contract with the Angels. Despite only playing in 134 games in 2019, Trout still had a career-high 45 home runs.
Right Field – Aaron Judge, New York Yankees
2019 Stats: BA: .272 RBI: 55 HR: 27
Aaron Judge is not only a great power hitter but also an elite defender as well. Started 2019 on a tear by hitting .288 with five home runs and 11 RBI in 20 games before missing two months with an oblique injury.
National League
First Base – Freddie Freeman, Atlanta Braves
2019 Stats: BA: .295 RBI: 121 HR: 38
Freddie Freeman was selected to his fourth consecutive All-Star game and second consecutive start in 2019. Joined teammates Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies as National League Silver Slugger Award winners.
Second Base – Ozzie Albies, Atlanta Braves
2019 Stats: BA: .295 RBI: 86 HR: 24
The Braves locked up their young star last year by signing him to a seven-year, $35 million dollar extension. Ozzie Albies’ .994 fielding percentage led all Major League second basemen in 2019.
Third Base – Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies
2019 Stats: BA: .315 RBI: 118 HR: 41
Agreed to an eight-year, $260 million dollar extension with the Colorado Rockies last year. Not just a great hitter, Nolan Arenado also won his seventh consecutive Gold Glove Award in 2019.
Shortstop – Trea Turner, Washington Nationals
2019 Stats: BA: .298 RBI: 57 HR: 19
One of the fastest players in the league, Trea Turner was second in the NL in stolen bases in 2019 with 35. His 2019 campaign was limited to 122 games due to a right index finger injury that required offseason surgery.
Catcher – J.T. Realmuto, Philadelphia Phillies
2019 Stats: BA: .275 RBI: 83 HR: 25
Gold Glove Award winner, Sliver Slugger Award winner, and first team All-Star for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019. Also one of the best defensive catchers in the league, J.T. Realmuto threw out an MLB leading 47% of attempted base stealers.
Left Field – Juan Soto, Washington Nationals
2019 Stats: BA: .282 RBI: 110 HR: 34
In 2019, Juan Soto became the fourth-youngest player to hit a home run in the World Series. He, along with teammate Stephen Strasburg, won the Babe Ruth Award for the most outstanding postseason player.
Center Field – Ronald Acuna Jr., Atlanta Braves
2019 Stats: BA: .280 RBI: 101 HR: 41
Another young star for the Atlanta Braves, he signed an eight-year, $100 million dollar contract in 2019 after less than one full year of MLB service. Ronald Acuna Jr. became the youngest player ever to join the 40-30 club and led the NL with 37 stolen bases.
Right Field – Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers
2019 Stats: BA: .329 RBI: 97 HR: 44
Christian Yelich won his second NL batting title in 2019 and became the first National League player to lead the league in batting average and slugging percentage in consecutive seasons since Rogers Hornsby. Finished second in NL MVP voting in 2019 and recently signed a nine-year, $215 million dollar extension to remain with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Outlook
There it is, the 2020 All-Star Game Starters as voted on by fans. Two formidable teams loaded with superstars. Each boasts MVPs, Gold Glove winners, and Silver Sluggers. If and when baseball resumes in America, the All-Star Game will hopefully be seen as a priority for this upcoming season.
Every year since 1933, the ”Midsummer Classic” has been played and has remained a fan favorite. It is seen as an event where the best of the best come together to compete. Let us hope that we will all be treated to America’s pastime very soon and that the All-Star selection doesn’t have to be mere speculation or simulation.
