Mets Acquire Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz from Mariners

In a deal that took a couple of days to reach a resolution, the New York Mets have acquired RHP Edwin Diaz, 2B Robinson Cano, and $20 million from the Seattle Mariners. In return, New York will be sending OF Jay Bruce, RHP Anthony Sawrzak, and prospects OF Jarred Kelenic, RHP Justin Dunn, and RHP Gerson Bautista to Seattle.

Mets Additions

The Mets are acquiring one of the top closers in the game right now in Diaz. In 2018, he led the league with 57 saves and posted a 1.87 ERA with 124 strikeouts. He will be a tremendous addition to the backend of a relatively weak Mets bullpen.

Cano, was more of a salary dump from Seattle but could be a asset for the Mets. In 41 games after his PED suspension, Cano hit .317/.363/.497 with 12 doubles and six home runs. He figures to slide in as the everyday second baseman, pushing Jeff McNeil to third base.

Mariners Additions

For Seattle, they are receiving a pair of first round picks in Dunn and Kelenic. Kelenic is seen by many scouts as a potential five tool player. The 19-year old outfielder was selected by the Mets with the sixth pick of the 2019 MLB draft.

Dunn, a Boston College alum, has potential as a starter, but has also been used as a reliever at times. He is much closer to making an impact at the big league level than Kelenic is.

Last Word

Despite what many have considered a severe over pay, I actually like this deal for the Mets. The 2019 club is already improved compared to last season, and it is only December.

I think this is a strong start to what is said to be a very “aggressive and creative” offseason for new Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen. With that being said, there are still plenty more moves to be made to help build this team into a contender in the National League.
