Southern hemisphere rugby

Southern Hemisphere rugby has had to endure a period of change in the last month. Not battered to the same degree as Europe has, yet wage cuts, fans and players’ seasons disrupted, and unease for what the future may hold is certainly is disarming. While still well mannered and constructive, everything has been spoken of, […]

James Barker, Editor - Jun 12, 2019

Warren Gatland has been appointed Head Coach for the British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa in 2021. The New Zealander, who led Wales to the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2019, will reprise his role with the British and Irish Lions for a record-equalling third time in a row. Only Sir Ian McGeechan […]

In a way, it is a tough ask all around. But to the credit of the organizers and planners, the marketing blitz launched the tagline “Out Roar”. For the supporters to out-roar the loud traveling support of the Lions team. Attracting a huge support-base, so to combat that fans of each franchise are asked to “be there”. Not only that, the home fans need to raise their voices; to “be heard” but so too the home teams also need to ‘put up their best’.

The players will feel the intensity too. And with both sides running out in red; while it might distract a little, the action will be red hot. It could out shine any test, with the hosts playing with their usual high-speed intensity.! A huge fixture awaits locals. Crusaders v British and Irish Lions still holds tradition too.

Otago Highlanders v British & Irish Lions

If anything can be learned from this match, it is that the traditional rivals; such as existed on previous tours, are now replaced by the franchise teams. The Blues, Crusaders, Highlanders, Chiefs and finally the Hurricanes. A huge wall to climb by the tourists–only made more difficult, thanks to a famous Otago Highlanders victory.

Cory Jane

The former All Black, Cory Jane will play off the bench in the Hurricanes v Lions match on the Tuesday night. In being named, it is tribute to his staying power and fitness. The 34 year old still holds a place within the Wellington franchise, playing in the opening game of this 2017 Super Rugby season.

Michael Pulman - Jun 27, 2017

In the final midweek game of the 2017 tour, it was your typical ‘game of two halves’. A fired-up British and Irish Lions team taking the early lead, only for the barnstorming home side to come within a whisker of stealing a win. A thrilling 31-31 draw was a close-run-thing, as the Lions survive the […]

All Blacks v Lions

Overnight, the Kieran Read injury sustained during the Cheetahs v Crusaders game has raised concerns for the New Zealand All Blacks team. That, along with minor surgery taken by Jerome Kaino and an ankle sprain for Ben Smith, places an injury-cloud over all three men’s All Blacks v Lions availability. Injury is an issue for […]

Michael Pulman - Jun 4, 2017

No player should be selected for the All Blacks based on their name alone. But for Blues midfielder Sonny Bill Williams – this could well be the case. Williams has been named in the Blues side to take on the British and Irish Lions on Wednesday night, but there is a gigantic bracket overclouding the […]
