Well, it goes without saying that it is Friday once more. Friday Night SmackDown has arrived. In typical WWE fashion, we have just one match announced for tonight’s show: a WWE Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and Finn Balor. We are used to just the one match being announced and, at this point, are experts at predicting these cards. Just ignore all the times we have been wrong – like last week, when we thought Brock Lesnar would appear and, in Brock fashion, he no-showed. Thanks, Beast. Anyway, let’s dive in to the preview!
WWE Universal Championship Match: Roman Reigns (c) Vs. Finn Balor
Whereas big championship changes have happened on SmackDown in the past (think AJ Styles and Jinder Mahal), we can’t see history repeating itself here. In fact, this one might get – to quote an announcer for another wrestling promotion – “bowling shoe ugly”. Finn Balor was originally penciled (within storyline) in to be Roman Reigns’ opponent at SummerSlam 2021. You may remember that, during his contract signing, he was attacked by the increasingly desperate Baron Corbin, who was then attacked by John Cena – who went on to sign the contract in Balor’s absence. The man was robbed, plain and simple. Whereas he has a chance to rectify things tonight, it is unlikely; Roman Reigns and The Bloodline (Paul Heyman, Jimmy and Jey Uso)will see to that. The next PPV is Extreme Rules and with Brock Lesnar likely to be facing Reigns at the upcoming Saudi Crown Jewel event, Balor might just carry this feud on until Extreme Rules on September 26th. Expect Reigns to retain tonight but under questionable, feud prolonging circumstances.
Not Announced But Expected For Tonight’s SmackDown
– Sasha Banks is locally advertised for the show. Could we see her return, after her title shot was given to new SmackDown Women’s Champion, Becky Lynch, at SummerSlam? Regardless, expect Bianca Belair and the seemingly heel Becky to continue their feud.
– Happy Baron Corbin is here! Rejoice! Will he be continuing his feud with Big E? The newly minted former King was trying out his newfound luck to purchase Big E’s Money in the Bank briefcase. Could his attempts continue tonight?
