On today’s Summer Struggle event in Sapporo El Desperado defended his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship in the main event against Taiji Ishimori. Desperado won the match, making his second successful defense of the title. After the match, Robbie Eagles appeared via video and staked his claim as the next challenger for the championship.

This video and challenge means we will see Robbie Eagles return to New Japan Pro Wrestling for the first time since December 2020 when he competed in the Best Of the Super Junior, finishing with a respectable 8 points.
Since his last NJPW appearance Eagles has been keeping himself busy in Australia competing all over the country in a number of major matches. Now he is set to return to the big stage with NJPW to help revitalize the Jr. Heavyweight division which has been suffering in recent times due to injuries and COVID-19. With Eagles in the mix we could see him add to both the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship title picture and the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship title picture, both of which are in need of fresh bodies at the moment. Will Eagles be the first of a number of talent brought in to help the division? Well, that remains to be seen.
