Match Point is an ongoing series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. This edition looks at the upcoming grudge match between two of AEW’s brightest young stars as MJF takes on Sammy Guevara on AEW Dynamite.
For the first time ever in the main event of AEW Dynamite’s return to Wednesday nights. MJF will meet Sammy Guevara smackdab in the middle of the ring one on one. There has been no love lost between these two. Their hatred goes far back even before MJF’s betrayal of The Inner Circle and the formation of The Pinnacle. Guevara has been dying to get his hands on the leader of The Pinnacle for months and now he has got him mano a mano come Wednesday night.
Sammy is not doing this just for him. But also for The Inner Circle and everyone that MJF has wronged along the way. MJF callous, conniving, and, downright treacherous as ever, continues his quest to tighten his stranglehold on, not only All Elite Wrestling but professional wrestling as a whole. Taking no prisoners as only he could. But how did these two get to this point in time, where did it all start? Let us dive even deeper into this storied rivalry that grew out of hate and jealousy.
The Spanish God: Sammy Guevara
Ever since the formation of The Inner Circle, Sammy Guevara has been riding high with a dominant faction. Guevara notably fostered a relationship with Chris Jericho. The duo even dubbed themselves as “Le Sex Gods” at one point when they were teaming together in tag team contests. Guevara was, and still is, one of the hottest and youngest stars AEW has to offer. It all almost came crashing down when one Maxwell Jacob Friedman reared his ugly head and decided he wanted to join the faction. Sammy was always suspicious of MJF’s intentions and did not trust “The Salt Of The Earth” one bit. But with the vote of confidence from his stablemates and Chris Jericho, Maxwell gained entrance into the group. And “The Spanish God” had no choice but to face facts, albeit begrudgingly.
Sammy Guevara was not happy with all that was happening. He was even replaced and blatantly ousted by MJF himself as Chris Jericho’s full-time tag team partner. Guevara tried to warn everybody but nobody listened, at least at first. With tensions rising and knowing the inevitable conclusion and fledgling war, Sammy made a temporary exit from the group. Guevara could not withstand his growing distance from the family he has come to know.
Eventually, the devastating truth ultimately came out that MJF has been plotting against The Inner Circle the whole time. Sammy made his triumphant return to aid his faction in severing the relationship with Maxwell Jacob Friedman once and for all. Little did they know MJF was always one step ahead of them with a trump card no one saw coming.
The Salt of The Earth: MJF
Maxwell Jacob Friedman is known not to leave any stone unturned and shortcut taken. He has made a living out of screwing anyone and everyone in his path if it means it benefits him in the long run. MJF had exactly that in mind when he joined The Inner Circle last year. His goal was to tear the group apart from the inside with his intentions being that if he could turn The Inner Circle against Chris Jericho he would be left alone unwittingly for the taking. MJF has been jealous of Jericho’s spot from day one and will stop at nothing to dethrone the King from his perch.
Sammy was not having any of it though. MJF had a loose end in Guevara he had to tie up. He briefly had Guevara out of the way when his scheming led to Guevara’s premature exit from The Inner Circle. Jericho’s group was now a man down and that was the perfect time for Maxwell to pull the trigger. Sammy did come back to seemingly foil his plans but MJF was just too driven not to devise a plan so ingenious and foolproof it left everybody shocked. Thus, The Pinnacle was born. Wardlow, Shawn Spears, FTR, and, Tully Blanchard were enlisted to fight by MJF’s side and end The Inner Circle’s supposed reign of terror with a devastating beatdown that left the group torn and out of action for almost a month.
Bad Blood At It’s Boiling Point: MJF vs. Sammy Guevara
The two waged war with their respective factions inside the “Blood and Guts” double cage match. That match left everybody bloodied and beaten. With the conclusion being The Inner Circle conceding to The Pinnacle in fear of their leader’s career getting cut tragically short. But, MJF being who he is still chose the lowest of roads and proceeded to toss Chris Jericho off of the top of the steel structure almost ending his storied career in the business. But, the war was just about to start. As these two units would once again battle it out in a “Stadium Stampede” match wherein The Inner Circle evened out the score with Sammy Guevara getting the pinfall victory over Shawn Spears after hitting the 450 Splash at Double or Nothing.
Come Wednesday night, there will be nowhere to run or hide for either man. Although, MJF took it to another level this past Saturday. Ahead of their battle this June 30, MJF and The Pinnacle would try to incapacitate not only Guevara but also the entirety of The Inner Circle. Needless to say, Sammy Guevara will not be one hundred percent for this matchup after the chair shot he suffered from Shawn Spears. With that being said, Guevara has the heart of a lion and the vengeful spirit to back it up as he still came back later in the night to send The Pinnacle hightailing out of the arena.
Calling this “personal” is an understatement. These two have been at each other’s throats since day one. And for the first time ever with all the animosity that has built up things have reached a breaking point. It’s Guevara versus MJF in the return to Wednesday nights for AEW Dynamite. The high-flyer against the master tactician. Folks, this will be bowling shoe ugly and you do not want to miss it.
