#AndNEW: Sheamus Wins United States Championship at WrestleMania

Sheamus Riddle WrestleMania 37

On Night Two of WrestleMania 37, Sheamus challenged Riddle for the WWE United States Championship. These two hard-hitting competitors have been at odds for several weeks. This began when “The Celtic Warrior” attacked “The Original Bro” with the latter’s own scooter, leaving him laying backstage. Despite his laidback personality, Riddle knew the threat that Sheamus posed. It’s important to note that it wasn’t too long ago, before this, that Sheamus challenged Drew McIntyre, his longtime friend, for the WWE Championship. These efforts would prove fruitless.

At WrestleMania, Sheamus and Riddle did battle in the fourth match of Night Two. Sheamus kicked off the match quick, using a combination of mat wrestling and strength, asserting his authority over the reigning titleholder. However, Riddle fought back, even executing an overhead belly-to-belly suplex from the top rope. Even with two Jackhammer attempts from Riddle, the challenger remained in the match. The same could be said for Riddle, who endured much of Sheamus’ powerful offense, including a top rope knee drop. The match concluded when Sheamus caught an airborne Riddle with the Brogue Kick. Thus, “The Celtic Warrior” emerged victorious as the new United States Champion.

With this victory, Sheamus is officially a three-time United States Champion in WWE. The last time “The Celtic Warrior” held the title in question was back in 2014. On an episode of Monday Night RAW, he won a battle royal for the championship, which also included then-titleholder, Dean Ambrose. Since his main roster debut in the summer of 2009, Sheamus has become one of the most decorated WWE Superstars. Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank victories, in addition to four world titles, are just a few of his accomplishments in the company.

Sheamus holding the United States Championship brings considerable attention to the mid-card scene on Monday Night RAW. There will be numerous hungry competitors looking to make names for themselves at the expense of the Irish powerhouse. Riddle will undoubtedly be looking to reclaim his title after holding it for nearly 50 days. However, there will be other names to consider, from overlooked names such as Ricochet or Drew Gulak or perhaps stars prepping for their return including Keith Lee. It will be interesting to see how the U.S. Title scene develops on RAW.
