AEW Strikes Back: Matt Hardy & Private Party Invade IMPACT Wrestling

Private Party Chris Sabin James Storm IMPACT Wrestling

For weeks now, ever since Kenny Omega won the AEW World Championship from Jon Moxley at Winter is Coming on AEW Dynamite in December, Omega and his mentor Don Callis have jumped between All Elite Wrestling and IMPACT Wrestling‘s television, in a bizarre crossover between the two companies. Omega soon allied with former Bullet Club teammates Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows – current IMPACT World Tag Team Champions The Good Brothers – with the duo even appearing on AEW television. But it seemed like the crossover was becoming one-sided. Sure Kenny Omega, arguably AEW’s biggest star, was appearing on IMPACT, including a 6-man tag main event at IMPACT Hard to Kill this past Saturday. However, it almost seemed like the rest of AEW had zero interest or feelings of Omega spending more time with IMPACT’s Executive Vice President and “Invisible Hand” Don Callis. Well, all of that changed on Tuesday on IMPACT Wrestling, when Matt Hardy led out his proteges Private Party (Marq Quen & Isiah Kassidy) to challenge for the IMPACT World Tag Team Titles held by The Good Brothers. Moments earlier, Chris Sabin had brought out “Cowboy” James Storm, a 14x tag team champion in IMPACT Wrestling (7x NWA World Tag Team, 7x TNA World Tag Team), to challenge for the same titles. It set up a #1 Contenders Match for the main event, with the winners going on to face The Good Brothers.

During the main event, surprisingly, AEW owner Tony Khan made his way to ringside, with AEW Producer and former 2x IMPACT X-Division Champion Jerry Lynn at his side, and began to take notes during the match. Khan has been no stranger to IMPACT Wrestling of late; ever since Omega first appeared back in December, Khan – alongside AEW announcer Tony Schiavone – has been appearing weekly in a “paid advertisement” that has been one part promotion for that week’s AEW Dynamiteand one part IMPACT roast. But now Khan was away from a pre-recorded vignette and live at ringside, watching his own talents compete to challenge for IMPACT’s tag team titles.

But in the closing moments of the match, Jerry Lynn left his seat and interfered on Chris Sabin on the top ropes. This allowed Private Party set up their Gin & Juice move and pick up the win, making AEW’s Private Party now the #1 Contenders for the IMPACT World Tag Team Championships. Now that Tony Khan has interfered in the title picture of IMPACT Wrestling (much like IMPACT’s Don Callis did in AEW), it appears that the war between AEW and IMPACT Wrestling isn’t over. It’s just beginning.
