Preview: AEW Dynamite (9/30/20)

FTR vs SCU AEW Dynamite

It’s a big night set for tonight’s AEW Dynamite. Last week saw Cody return. Will he say yes to Mr. Brodie Lee’s unique request for a dog collar match? After months of building animosities, Darby Allin will finally get his hands on Ricky Starks. FTR are putting the belts on the line against SCU. Could the former champs become the first-ever two-time tag champs. Dr. Brtt Baker is seemingly ready to make her official in-ring return. And of course, Eddie Kingston gets to pick Jon Moxley’s poison as he chooses his opponent for tonight. It’s a can’t miss Dynamite. Check out our rundown of the card below.

Finally, after what feels like such a long build-up and near misses, finally, Darby Allin will get his hands on his rival, Ricky Starks. Ever since Allin insinuated himself in Jon Moxley’s title feud with Brian Cage, the skateboard-wielding wrestler has been in Starks’ crosshairs. He’s been a thorn in the side of Team Taz but equally so, they’ve been a thorn in Allin’s side as well. Specifically, Starks, who has stepped up as the guy to handle the business that Cage is beyond at this point. And Cage is certainly beyond tussles with Allin, so it’s up to Starks to take out the man once and for it. This should be one of the best matches of the night as both Starks and Allin have yet to really put up a dud since coming to AEW. Putting them together, with their clashing styles, should only add intrigue to the fight that this will be. Because make no mistake, with animosities being what they are, these two will engage in a brutal contest tonight.

There is a reason why in wrestling they say, “card to subject to change.” Due to Lance Archer testing positive for COVID-19, the card changed, resulting in a world title match for Eddie Kingston, who claimed he was never eliminated from the #1 contendership battle royale. Kingston’s promo abilities were enough to build some heat for that match and in the end, the action really delivered. Both Kingston and Moxley are cut from a similar cloth and used their brawling skills to really just make this a brutal affair. Moxley retained his title when Kingston passed out and the referee needed to call the match. But it would appear Kingston isn’t quite through with the champ yet. Tonight, on the last Dynamite of September, Kingston gets to choose Moxley’s opponent. It’s likely he’ll pick one of his faction mates meaning we could see Moxley vs Pentagon, which feels like would be the right call. We’ll have to wait and see who Kingston picks for the match and what kind of action that leads to on tonight’s show.

It’s an incredibly rare singles match as Isiah Kassidy steps in the ring without partner, Marq Quen, to take on Le Champion. Chris Jericho has been having some fun lately, teasing a tag title run with Jake Hager, as well as revisiting a decades-old rivalry with Matt Hardy. Jericho has been taunting Hardy, something that hasn’t sat well with Private Party, who Hardy is mentoring of sorts. Kassidy will have his shot to shut up the legend on Wednesday night. It will be interesting to see the long-time tag team wrestler back in singles action especially against an opponent of Jericho’s caliber.

She’s backkkkkk. And in the words of Eric Bischoff, “better than ever.” After missing months due to injury and only taking part in matches sporadically since then, it appears Dr. Britt Baker will be making her official in-ring return this week. It will be great to have Baker back in ring as she’s been one of the top overall performers in the company, even during her injury. It seems only a matter of time until she claims the women’s championship. Her road to that title could start to build as soon as tonight on AEW Dynamite.

FTR laid down the challenge pretty simply. On Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, they are giving SCU a chance to dethrone them and become the first-ever two-time tag champs in AEW history. It’s been somewhat of a pattern with FTR, who instead of heading down the rankings list, have been hand-picking their opponents. It just goes to show how in charge of the division they really are right now. Despite Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky not having wrestled many tag matches of late, the two can still perform to a high level as a duo. As the first-ever AEW tag champs, they’ll certainly be looking at this match as a great opportunity to get their belts back. FTR are confident however and don’t seem like they’ll be losing the titles anytime soon. After all, the Young Bucks are still lurking and if Twitter is any indication, they will get their chance soon enough. But in the meantime, FTR will look to win their “Brush of Greatness,” and continue to establish themselves as the best tag team in the company.
