Chris Sabin Returning to IMPACT Wrestling Ring?

Chris Sabin is forever etched in the history books of IMPACT Wrestling as a former TNA World Heavyweight Champion, but also as part of one of the greatest tag teams of the past 20 years alongside Alex Shelley in the Motor City Machine Guns, who were 2x TNA World Tag Team Champions, as well as tag team champions in Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling (where they captured the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles). Sabin suffered a terrible knee injury in early 2019 as part of ROH’s roster, which kept him out for the rest of the year. He did a guest trainer spot at the WWE Performance Center last year while off, and has since been working with IMPACT in a producer role. But on Tuesday night, Chris Sabin sent out an intriguing tweet that seems to imply that he was closer than ever to a return to the ring and that the return will be happing in an IMPACT Wrestling ring.

The news came out of the blue for many and saw several responses from other wrestlers. One of them came from IMPACT star Daga, who asked for a match, which drew a response from IMPACT Executive Vice President Scott D’Amore who would “love to see that!”

But while many would love to see the 8x IMPACT X-Division Champion make his return to the ring in any capacity, most are arguably chomping at the bit to see him reunite with Alex Shelley, who made his own return to pro wrestling last July after a one-year sabbatical, working with Ring of Honor and a brief stint in NXT this past January with another former tag partner in KUSHIDA. Shelley even commented on Sabin’s tweet last night, suggesting Sabin come and train alongside him.

Adding fuel to the fire of a possible MCMG reunion would be comments made last month by Shelley, who revealed that he was supposed to reunite with Sabin as Motor City Machine Guns for IMPACT’s TNA special that would have occurred during this year’s WrestleMania Week in Tampa, prior to the events being canceled due to COVID-19. Sabin had previously been announced for the event, but the MCMG news was kept secret at the time.

Someone of Chris Sabin’s caliber could easily fit into a program with anyone on the roster – from the World title picture to facing Moose over the prestige of the TNA World title (which Sabin once held). IMPACT World Tag Team Champions The North (Ethan Page & Josh Alexander) are having a hard time finding competition right now and with their very public love for the TNA-era of IMPACT, it would almost be fitting for TNA Legends like Motor City Machine Guns to return to face The North.
