Double Or Nothing

Cody vs Lance Archer Should Main Event AEW Double Or Nothing

We only know one match from the Double Or Nothing card and that is the finals of the TNT Championship Tournament which will pit Cody against the monstrous, unbeaten Lance Archer.  Despite only knowing this match it is clear that this match should main event the show given that there are only three episodes of Dynamite left before the event.  Let’s get into why we believe this match should go on last

Why Cody vs Lance Archer Should Main Event Double Or Nothing

Cody Is The Ace

Cody is without a doubt the biggest babyface star in AEW.  The fanbase lives and dies by what he does and he often receives the loudest reactions of anyone on the show.  Couple this with Archer being a newly signed and unbeatable monster and you have the perfect recipe for one of Cody’s story-based matches which should have the crowd (if there is one) at a fever pitch to either see Cody crowned the first-ever champion in what would be an unforgettable moment, or to see the creation of a new star as Archer defeats one of the top names in the company and goes in the history books as the first-ever TNT Champion.

No Other Match Can Have A Build As Strong

When one looks elsewhere on the card there are no obvious big matches that stand out as main event matches.  Jon Moxley has been without a feud since dispatching Jake Hager weeks ago and it would be difficult to build to a hot match between him and a challenger in just three episodes of Dynamite unless they run a rematch with Chris Jericho, who is currently busy with Matt Hardy.  In the tag team title picture, Hangman Page hasn’t been on TV in quite some time and while the Best Friends have been building momentum it’s hard to see a tag title match headlining since the tag team champions haven’t teamed together at all recently.

The women’s division has a similar issue in that champion Nyla Rose (last seen feuding with Bea Priestley) hasn’t been on TV in a good while, number one contender Hikaru Shida hasn’t been around in recent weeks either.  Star of the division Britt Baker has suffered too many big losses to be worthy of a big title shot and if she faced Rose it would be a heel vs heel match.  Simply put it’s hard to imagine AEW making any other match feel as important as Cody vs Archer in just three weeks of television given most champions and their top contenders haven’t interacted in weeks, or in some cases months.

Instantly Makes The Championship Prestigious

If AEW really wants to establish the TNT Championship as a true secondary title and not just a midcard prop like WWE’s US and IC titles then main eventing a major show like Double Or Nothing would go a long way to boosting the prestige of the title.  It would establish it as a legitimate top title in the company that anyone can fight for and smash the glass ceiling that western fans seem to associate with secondary belts.  While good booking down the line can elevate this title over time the best way to make an immediate impact would be to crown the first-ever champion in the main event of a major show to set the tone early on for what the title will mean.
