Preview: ICW – GONZO #3 (2/1/20)

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) kick off their 9th Annual Square Go! weekend the day before the annual over the tap event, as they return to the Glasgow Pro Wrestling Asylum (GPWA) for the third instalment of their GONZO franchise. The first two shows held under the banner have received rave reviews, with the likes of Leyton Buzzard, Kieran Kelly, and Michael May becoming the main stars of the brand. With the Zero-G Championship once again set to main event GONZO, it’s looking set to be yet another outstanding event for the future of ICW.

9th Annual Square Go! Qualifying Match: Luke Kyro vs Craig Anthony

Seeing as the 9th Annual Square Go! takes place the following evening at the SWG3, ICW management have offered a huge opportunity to two of the brightest up and comers in Scottish wrestling right now, as Luke Kyro meets Craig Anthony with a spot in the Square Go! Match on the line. For Luke, this will be his ICW debut, but he has been making a huge name for himself in ICW’s Wrestling Experience Scotland brand, where he had a standout performance against the current ICW World Heavyweight Champion, Stevie Boy back in September. As for his opponent though, the ICW faithful have become fairly familiar with the work of Craig Anthony over the last year. ‘The Natural’ officially debuted for ICW in a winning effort over Charlie Vyce in April, however, Anthony had been in ICW for much longer under a mask as a member of Mark Coffey‘s Power Forward unit alongside Grant McIvor and Scott McManus. Now that Coffey has turned his back on his henchmen, Anthony is going into business for himself. The Source Wrestling School graduate only debuted in March 2018, something you would never be able to guess based off of his ability. For Kyro, it could very well be death by natural causes if Anthony has his way.

Kieran Kelly vs Daz Black

In what could easily be an early match of the year contender, ‘Shotgun’ Kieran Kelly will tangle with Daz Black, who is making his ICW singles debut after participating in the Fear & Loathing XII pre-show Rumble Match. Kelly has become one of the most beloved members of the ICW roster since early 2018, with his battles opposite Leyton Buzzard rising the stock of both individuals. Currently in possession of both the Megaslam Wrestling Championship and the Premier British Wrestling (PBW) Tag Team Championships, the latter of which he holds alongside I-Gen partner Craig Anthony, Kieran hasn’t had the best of luck in ICW over the last few months with loss after loss. However, a loss to such a young talent such as Daz Black would send Kelly on an even bigger downward spiral. ‘The Orbit Breaker’ has quickly been rising through the ranks of Scottish wrestling, with huge victories in Pro Wrestling Scotland (PWS) over both Stevie Xavier and Kenny Williams, while also advancing to the finals of the Pro Wrestling Innovation (PWI) Young Lions Tournament – there, he’ll meet Big Money Enterprises member Danny Edwards. 2020 could very well be the year of Daz Black if he’s able to continue this impressive streak.

Angel Hayze vs Kasey

A rematch from ICW’s January Fight Club tapings will see Angel Hayze once again lock horns with Kasey, with ‘The Young Lioness’ hoping to get things back on track following a loss to ‘The Mother of Chaos’ a few weeks ago. After bringing The Wee Man in as her manager, the hard-hitting Irish lass had been successful in her ICW career, but the last few months haven’t been too kind for her. In fact, that first match with Angel was Kasey’s first since ditching his managerial services. Clearly, it’s worked out in her favour so far, but will that success continue going into Square Go! weekend? Hayze has proven to be a huge addition to the ICW roster since her debut at the end of August, however, she hasn’t done too much so far. She picked up a surprising victory over Viper in October at France 2000, but aside from that, she’s not done big things in ICW. If she’s able to defeat a former three-time ICW Women’s World Champion, then you’d have to imagine that Hayze would then go on to challenge either Aivil or Isla Dawn post-Square Go! for the championship.

Ravie Davie vs Rickey Shane Page

Ravie Davie likes to think he’s the most dangerous man on the ICW roster. To be fair to him, he’s more or less got every right to be saying such a thing – ‘The Ned Nightmare’ is indeed one of the hardest men to ever wrestle for ICW. If you don’t believe him, then he’ll just send his gang of neds after you, including his cousin and Govan Team partner Zander McGuire, so you may as well just agree with him. He’ll have to put his money where his mouth is though, as the GPWA graduate comes face to face with deathmatch wrestling extraordinaire Rickey Shane Page. RSP has been victorious in tournaments such as Combat Zone Wrestling‘s (CZW) Tournament of Death and IWA Mid-South‘s King of the Death Matches, proving exactly how deadly he is when he steps inside the ring. While he may not have been that extreme in his ICW debut this past July against Krieger (that table just didn’t want to break), ‘The Mid-West Martyr’ will no doubt be in his most extreme mindset when he returns to ICW.

BT Gunn vs Alexander Dean

With his original opponent no longer appearing at GONZO, Alexander Dean laid down a challenge to any member of the ICW roster to face him, with that challenge being answered by BT Gunn. Both men were part of the recent Six Man Scrap at the last set of Fight Club tapings, with the elimination order for that bout meaning ‘The Catch Provocateur’ will begin the match at number ten, while ‘The Oddity’ goes in at number one. The former World Heavyweight Champion will have to go the distance if he hopes to win his first Square Go! briefcase, but even then, he won’t be going into the bout at 100% seeing as he has to go toe to toe with the brutal Irishman just 24 hours before. ‘The Politickin’ Time Bomb’ has gone on to become one of the most dangerous and destructive forces on the ICW roster since arriving this past June, unsuccessfully challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship on his first night in the company. Dean will be hoping for a much different result should he win the Square Go! Match, but first, he has to deal with one of the best ICW has to throw at him. The former Union of European Wrestling Alliances (UEWA) European Heavyweight Champion has every single tool needed to be the face of ICW, it’s just a matter of whether or not he pulls it off.

The Kings of Catch (Aspen Faith & Lewis Girvan) vs The Kings of the North (Bonesaw & Damien Corvin)

The Kings of Catch and The Kings of the North are two teams no stranger to one another, having faced off in numerous different promotions, either in straight-up two on two tag team action, or with other participants involved in the bout as well. Empire Wrestling, TNT Extreme Wrestling, ICW itself, the four men simply can’t get enough of beating the living daylights out of one another. Their previous outing in ICW was this past September, with Aspen Faith and Lewis Girvan retaining their Tag Team Championships, however, the duo now also find themselves in the hunt for some gold. All four of these men are scheduled to enter the Square Go! Match the following evening – Faith has stated he’s going into it with the intention of cashing in for the Tag Team Championships should he come away with the championship contract, something that you’d have to imagine Bonesaw and Damien Corvin will also be doing. Despite the mission of ‘The Lost Boy’ to get the doubles gold back, Girvan is insisting of cashing the contract in for the World Heavyweight Championship. Perhaps there’s some dissension within the ranks of The Kings of Catch. Only one team can sit at the top of the throne, remember.

Kez Evans vs Wolfgang

As it turns out, low blowing BT Gunn at Shug’s Hoose Party 5 a year and a half ago was the best career choice possible for Kez Evans. Ever since that moment, ‘The Dastardly One’ has had some incredible opportunities in ICW, with his biggest two coming in the last two months – he defeated NXT UK star Ilja Dragunov at Fear & Loathing XII, before then going on to unsuccessfully try and pry the Zero-G Championship away from Liam Thomson. After securing the number fifteen spot in the Square Go! Match, Kez has to first look ahead to his huge bout with another NXT UK star in the form of Wolfgang, one of the men who assists in the training at the GPWA where Evans honed his craft. ‘The Regulator’ is reeling off the back of an exhilarating Tag Team Championships Ladder Match at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II, where he and fellow Gallus pal Mark Coffey retained their coveted titles. It’s been just under three weeks since that fantastic contest, but the 2016 Square Go! winner may not be 100% recovered quite yet, judging by some of the things he put his body through that night. All it takes is one mistake, and he’ll be spiked on his head with a Kez Dispenser.

ICW Zero-G Championship: Leyton Buzzard (c) vs Kenny Williams

As is the common case with the GONZO events, the Zero-G Championship will be the main attraction for the evening, as Leyton Buzzard makes his second defence of the title against a man who helped put the division on the map, Kenny Williams. ‘The Lucky Yin’ confronted Buzzard following his victory over TK Cooper two weeks ago, inserting himself as the next challenger of ‘The Captain’ in an attempt to break his own record by becoming a four-time Zero-G Champion. Whoever wins here will then advance to the following night, as former champ Liam Thomson awaits the champion when he cashes in his obligatory championship rematch clause. No doubt about it, Leyton scratched and clawed his way to the top of the Zero-G division, so there’s absolutely no way he’ll be giving up easily. The journey he’s been on since the end of July has been a sensational rise to the top of ICW – something that Kenny Williams will look to put an immediate stop to.
