The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) brought back an old staple in the Crockett Cup, an annual tag team tournament that was previously held from 1986 to 1988. When Ted Turner purchased Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP), the parent company of Mid Atlantic and various other NWA regions and rebranded as World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1988, the Crockett Cup was shelved. But under the ownership of Billy Corgan, the NWA has begun to bring back some of its legacies, including bringing back the Crockett Cup, which was held on Saturday night after a 31-year hiatus. This year’s edition also looked to crown new NWA World Tag Team Champions, belts that have been vacant since Corgan took over, with the Crockett Cup winners being crowned new champions. It also saw a new NWA World Woman’s Champion, as the previous champion Jazz recently had to vacate the title due to health and personal issues. Saturday’s event took place in a former NWA stronghold of North Carolina.

In the match to determine the new NWA World Women’s Champion, it pitted former NWA Women’s Champion Santana Garrett against Allysin Kay. Following an intro from former WWE Women’s Champion Madusa (aka Alundra Blayze), the two locked in for a solid match up. But it was Allysin Kay, the former 2x IMPACT Knockouts Champion and Shine Champion, who emerged victorious as the new NWA World Women’s Champion.

In one of the title defenses, former 2x NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion Colt Cabana added more NWA gold to his trophy case when he defeated Willie Mack for the NWA National Heavyweight Championship. The National title was a mainstay in Georgia Championship Wrestling since 1980 and was unified with the NWA United States Championship in 1986 when Nikita Koloff defeated Wahoo McDaniel. It was reinstated by the NWA in 1997 and has been a secondary title ever since. Following Cabana’s victory, he was challenged by former IMPACT World Heavyweight Champion “Cowboy” James Storm.

The first three Crockett Cups were won by the Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal), The Super Powers (Dusty Rhodes & Nikita Koloff) and Sting & Lex Luger, and now Villain Enterprise‘s PCO & Brody King can add their name as they next Crockett Cup champions. The last NWA World Tag Team Champions were The Heatseekers (Elliott Russell & Sigmon), who were on their fourth reign when the titles were vacated in September of 2017, and now King & PCO become the 85th champions in the title’s history since their creation in 1992. Previous to that, each NWA territory had their own tag team titles, and throughout the title’s history, it was defended in WCW, WWF, TNA/IMPACT Wrestling, and the various NWA affiliates of the indie scene.
In the finals, it came down to Villain Enterprises versus the ad hoc tandem of West Coast star Royce Isaacs (of One Percent) teaming with Thomas Latimer (best known as Bram from IMPACT). King and PCO won by DQ over the Briscoes, that saw the Briscoes lay the beatdown on the ref for the decision, while Isaacs & Latimer defeated ROH’s Flip Gordon & Bandido after being guided by Madusa. In the end, xxx was presented the Crockett Cup by former winner Nikita Koloff with the surviving Crockett family members in attendance, as they became the 2019 Crockett Cup champions and the new NWA World Tag Team Champions. Koloff was also joined by former NWA United States Champion Magnum TA, who was undeniably one of NWA’s biggest emerging stars before a tragic car accident in 1986.
