Stephanie McMahon “Wants” Serena Williams for the WWE Women’s Division

Serena Williams

In an interview with United Kingdom publication The Sun, Stephanie McMahon shares her thoughts about whom else she would like to include in the growing women’s division. McMahon shared that if it was up to her she would bring in arguably the greatest women’s tennis player of this generation, current multiple-time ATP women’s tournament winner Serena Williams.

“Serena! I want Serena,” McMahon said, “she’s awesome.”

The suggestion of Serena Williams only adds to the company’s continuous desire to grow its women’s division on Smackdown Live, Monday Night Raw and NXT. As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to bring in international talent the idea of bringing in Williams would certainly raise eyebrows as it would certainly surprise many as she doesn’t have a combat background despite being an athlete. How would she fair? It doesn’t appear to be of any concern to Stephanie McMahon as she likely believes that Williams will be taken care of. She then goes on to share how the process of development and recruitment for the company has taken place within the company.

“The back story is my husband Paul (Levesque aka Triple H) had started recruiting elite athletes from all over the world – both male and female. We started training our women the same as the men and hired our first-ever female coach. They started giving our women the same match time and opportunity at live events, which like anything else, the more reps you do the better you become. So everyone had an even playing field and it made all the difference.”

McMahon’s desire to bring in Williams follows the company’s history of bringing in notable sports names to be a part of their product. This is no more evident than their acquisition of current Raw women’s champion, Ronda Rousey, former UFC competitors Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Sharif.

While unlikely that Serena Williams becomes a WWE superstar anytime soon (she’s still an active tennis player and unlike the above four names hasn’t shown that kind of interest in wrestling), it will be interesting to see her thoughts on McMahon’s endorsement. Maybe, a WWE career could be in the cards after all.
