On Saturday, August 18th, Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW) is hosting a historic event for Australian wrestling: their one hundredth show, aptly named MCW 100, is taking place at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The venue, just outside Melbourne in Albert Park, can hold up to 1,800 fans, which would be the largest independent pro wrestling event in Australia’s history. This would overtake the previous largest event, which happened earlier this year when Pro Wrestling Australia (PWA) co-promoted a joint show with PROGRESS in Sydney, which was the first Indy show Down Under to crack four digits for the attendances figure.

MCW is bringing in the big guns to try and fill this ambitious arena, as Los Ingobernables de Japon leader and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) superstar Tetsuya Naito will be going one on one with Australian heavyweight Jonah Rock, who has also worked for such prestigious independent promotions as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) and PROGRESS Wrestling. So far, that is the only match announced for the event.
Contextually, 2018 is shaping up to be a watershed year for Australian wrestling in almost every sense. In addition to the two largest independent shows in the country’s history happening this same calendar year, both New Japan Pro Wrestling and PROGRESS Wrestling have done historic tours of Australia this year with the former possibly coming back in the fall; WWE is doing one of their largest events ever in Melbourne in October at WWE Super Show-Down, where they hope to crack 100,000 in attendance; prominent promotions throughout the world are booking more and more Australian talent, highlighted by Robbie Eagles, Jonah Rock, and Adam Brooks booked for PWG Battle of Los Angeles this September, not to mention The Iiconics’ push on Smackdown Live, Buddy Murphy’s on 205 Live, and The Mighty’s on NXT. MCW 100 is the next step in the Aussie’s Wrestling scene rise to worldwide prominence.
