This weekend, WWE will be presenting the 13th edition of the WWE Night of Champions event. The event has existed since 2007 and has served as the event where all titles are defended. However, it now serves as the event where the King and Queen of the Ring are crowned. With the event happening this Saturday, let’s take a look at the Top 5 Night of Champions events.
5. WWE Night of Champions 2011
Night of Champions was the follow-up to two big PPV events that summer, Money in the Bank and SummerSlam, both of which featured the memorable and well-received CM Punk vs. John Cena feud.
Things were on fire at this point as CM Punk was becoming the character that we know and love, Kevin Nash returned, WWE was pushing new talent, and SmackDown was having a great year.
The big story of the show was the feud between CM Punk and Triple H. Kevin Nash had recently returned at SummerSlam and would attack Punk, which caused Alberto Del Rio to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase and beat Punk to win the WWE Championship.
Punk would call out Nash for his attack and would also go after Triple H, as he believed that he was the reason for the attack. What started as a scheduled match between CM Punk and Kevin Nash would be changed to CM Punk now facing Triple H in a No Disqualification match, which HHH would win.
This show was also known for Mark Henry finally winning the World Heavyweight Championship against Randy Orton. Henry was on a highly praised run with a new “Hall of Pain” gimmick and cut a memorable promo about how he worked very hard for 15 years to get to that moment.
Other matches on the show included John Cena defeating Alberto Del Rio to win the WWE Championship, Dolph Ziggler retaining his United States Championship in a Fatal 4-Way match, and Cody Rhodes retaining his Intercontinental Championship against Ted DiBiase.
