AEW Dynamite Preview (4/29/26): Allin vs. King, MJF vs. Knight

Following another explosive and memorable Dynamite, a show bookended by big announcements for this week, we have two huge AEW title contests to celebrate the end of April. Rather than waste time with witty, gay banter, let’s get to the nitty-gritty.

AEW TNT Championship: Kevin Knight vs. MJF

The Jet landed in Portland with a challenge for the (whining) former AEW World champion. Back in El Paso, MJF narrowly avoided an upset against Kevin Knight. Now, with a different type of championship silver resting on his shoulder, Knight wants to even the score. To cement his rise through the stratosphere by claiming a victory, the Jet believed was his for the taking.

Carrying on the spiritual legacy of the TNT championship, the willingness to defend the title against whoever wants to step up, Knight gambled. Prepared to fight then and there, was he aware that MJF would weasel out? That the Devil would want time to prepare? Hopefully, unlike MJF, Knight actually watches AEW programming. Side-note- what a fantastic long-term bit of character flaw for MJF’s character!

As one of the best TNT Championship matches in history, it’s hard to call the outcome. It’s easy to think Knight evens the score. Yet Allin challenged MJF last week to put something on the line. Who can forget when Darby Allin said the TNT Championship meant more to him than the AEW World Championship? It would not be the first time AEW has run a title vs. title match.

Yet, if Knight retains, this would be the biggest victory of his career. As we saw last week with Will Ospreay, upsets happen for the sake of the story. Where would MJF go if he lost this match? Likewise, where would Knight go next? Everything is so wonderfully interlinked right now.

AEW World Championship: Darby Allin vs. Brody King

Speaking of Darby Allin, it seems the daredevil is bringing his ride-or-die mindset that made his TNT Championship runs so engaging to his AEW World Championship reign. After a stellar first defence against the Psycho Killer, Tomaso Ciampa, friend/enemy, Brody King steps up.

A rivalry with deep roots that extends deep into the West Coast indies, this will be their ninth singles encounter. From AAW to PWG to a coffin match that saw the former Hound of Hell toss Allin around like a chew toy, these two know violence. King assaulted Allin at a fan convention and had Darby’s gravestone tattooed on his hand. Later, Allin smashed King’s head in with a stone.

Yet the mood of this match differs. Two men who recently teamed together, putting their differences aside, showed mutual respect last Wednesday. But when that bell rings, that respect only counts for so much.

King has challenged once already. Will MJF be tempted to interfere? Give King the opening that allowed him to defeat MJF to earn that AEW World Championship shot. In many respects, Darby Allin’s quick victory again mirrored the devil’s hubris.

If Allin survives, the lingering question is: Will he be physically able to defend the belt next week?
