Did Penta Retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship against El Grande Americano on 3/9 Raw?

On the March 2, 2026 episode of Monday Night Raw, Penta faced Dominik Mysterio for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. That was their sixth meeting for the title, so both men knew going in to fight their hardest.

That’s exactly what happened, and in the end, Penta became the new Intercontinental Champion. However, he technically didn’t get the victory on his own. Before the match, Mysterio met Danhausen backstage with Finn Balor and JD McDonagh. After they disrespected him, he told them, “YOU ARE CURSED”.

They thought he was joking, but Mysterio ended the night losing his championship. Danhausen’s curse actually works, with him being its first recipient. Was he going to unknowingly help Penta for the second week in a row by cursing his first opponent, or would Penta retain all on his own?

Penta Wins an Exciting Match over El Grande Americano

The rivalry between El Grande Americano and “The Original” El Grande Americano has been brewing across WWE and AAA. They’ve fought several times since they encountered each other at the Royal Rumble in January. With Original Americano having the honor of being Penta’s first opponent, Americano and Los Americanos wouldn’t be far behind.

However, Danhausen got to him first. Once again, he got disrespected, and he uttered a curse against the Original Americano. When it was time to face Penta, he was nowhere to be found. Instead, Americano came out to answer Penta’s call. Danhausen’s curse towards Original Americano worked.

The match was action-packed from the beginning. After a leapfrog by Americano and a kick from Penta, they began running the ropes several times. That promptly ended after another hard kick by Penta.

After getting up, Americano delivered a running uppercut, which was met with a third kick after retreating to the opposite turnbuckle. He then got hit with a backstabber and a springboard clothesline to the outside. Penta tried to jump outside, but Americano hit him in the face. They began throwing hands until Penta jumped on the ropes.

His next move was stopped with a headbutt and an unsuccessful pin by Americano. He followed that up with a slingblade, a kick to the face, a dropkick to the stomach, and a Tope con Hilo to the outside, all in one sequence. Getting Americano back in the ring, he delivered a crossbody for the unsuccessful pin.

After successfully countering an Americano dive, he connected with the Springboard Mexican Destroyer for the pinfall victory. For the second week in a row, Danhausen helped Penta without his knowledge. Is this just a coincidence, or are his actions part of a larger storyline?
