Goldberg Begins Training for Final Match - But When Will It Be?

Goldberg Begins Training for Final Match – But When Will It Be?

The road to Bill Goldberg’s final ever match is underway. The WWE and WCW alum posted an image to his Instagram to mark the occasion.

“And the grind begins…..assembling my inring crew” read the caption. Among the crew pictured alongside Goldberg were his son, Gage, and renowned strength and mobility coach, Jimmy House.

Also pictured were AEW’s Marshall and Ross Von Erich, sons of WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Von Erich. Marshall and Ross are also the current ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions, alongside Dustin Rhodes.

Also tagged but not pictured was professional boxer and mixed martial artist Tyrone Spong. Spong, who holds a 100% record in professional boxing after 14 bouts, is a former WBO and WBC Latino Heavyweight Champion.

With news of Goldberg’s retirement match being made official, the four-time world champion’s road to in-ring fitness has garnered much attention in the media in recent months. Goldberg recently underwent stem cell treatment and made significant lifestyle changes to assist with his preparations.

Goldberg has also recently discussed the prospect of his son Gage following in his footsteps and becoming a professional wrestler. Appearing on the Ariel Helwani Show, he noted that Gage has all the necessary attributes should he choose that path.

Goldberg initially started out in American Football, debuting for the Atlanta Falcons in 1992 under coach Deion Sanders. Coincidentally, Gage will be coached by Sanders, committing himself to the Colorado Buffaloes for the upcoming season.

Who Will Goldberg’s Final Opponent Be, And When Will It Happen?

The interview with Helwani also reignited creative discussions over who Goldberg’s final opponent could possibly be. Bron Breakker was discussed as a viable option, especially with consideration of Goldberg and Scott Steiner’s WCW feud in 2000.

However, Gunther is the name that refuses to go away as Goldberg prepares to sign off from wrestling for good. Last October, Gunther addressed Goldberg at Bad Blood, sowing the seeds for a contest in the future. Theoretically, a final match with Gunther seems like a realistic prospect in the context of the World Heavyweight Champion’s current storyline.

Should Gunther lose the title to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41, it would provide a good amount of time for Goldberg to prepare physically and for a feud to gain momentum. It would also free Gunther up to fully invest his energy in the feud.

With upcoming PLEs considered, SummerSlam might just be where Goldberg delivers his final spear.
