WWE NXT Recap (9/12/23) – Becky Lynch Captures NXT Gold, Becomes Grand Slam Champion

WWE NXT this week promised to be an exciting card and it delivered on several ends. The show featured a match for the NXT Women’s Championship but there were several other segments that had title implications. Here are the highlights of all that happened this week.

Becky Lynch Becomes Captures NXT Gold And Becomes Grand Slam Champion

The main event of the evening would witness Tiffany Stratton put her NXT Women’s Championship on the line against one of the most prominent women in all of WWE Becky Lynch. The two’s feud began when Stratton mistakenly referred to Lynch as a former NXT Women’s champion, which she is not, but it did make the former multi-time women’s champion shift her focus to achieving that. This match was a fast-paced one from the get-go filled with reversals and counters between the pair.

There were a few close calls but a Manhandle Slam from Lynch ultimately secured the victory for her. By winning this match, Lynch holds the NXT Women’s Championship for the first time in her career. Having previously held the WWE Women’s Championship (formerly Raw Women’s Championship), the Women’s World Championship (formerly SmackDown Women’s Championship), the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, and now the NXT Women’s gold, Lynch now earns the Grand Slam title.

Lynch is only the sixth woman in the WWE to achieve this and, with her new position at the helm of the NXT women’s roster, she can expect a whole lot of new competition on Tuesday nights.

Ilja Dragunov Overcomes Wes Lee To Get Another Shot At Carmelo Hayes

Ilja Dragunov and Wes Lee did not waste time in trying to determine who the number one contender for the NXT Championship would be, as they kicked off this week’s edition of WWE NXT. As expected, both competitors put on a show with a steady back and forth before shifting into higher gear as the desperation to challenge for gold grew. The two threw all they could at each other as they tried to subdue their adversary.

The two exchanged offense for a while but Dragunov managed to eventually deliver a Tope Con Giro followed up by some headbutts to get the pinfall victory. NXT Champion, Carmelo Hayes, clearly had a close eye on this match as he soon made his presence felt by confronting his rather familiar number-one contender ahead of their match at No Mercy. En route to that PLE on September 30, it can be expected that the two will have a few other confrontations and try to deliver psychological warfare upon their opponent ahead of their clash.

Elsewhere on this card, an update on Von Wagner‘s condition following the brutal post-match attack by Bron Breakker was given. NXT commentator, Vic Joseph, let it be known that Wagner has specialists looking at him and there is no timetable for his return at present. The NXT Women’s Breakout Tournament was announced to be starting soon (but there is no date yet).

Tyler Bate and Nathan Frazer won their  NXT Global Heritage Invitational group match-ups against Axiom and Akira Tozawa respectively. Carmelo Hayes and ‘Dirty’ Dom Mysterio are set to clash in a champion vs. champion match-up on next week’s edition of NXT.
