Preview: WWE Raw (8/28/23) – Payback Go-Home Show

WWE Monday Night Raw this week comes to us from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee. A venue that WWE has frequented a lot since opening in 2004. The venue is the famous home of the March 10th, 2014 edition of WWE Raw.

In an attempt to finally secure a spot in that year’s WrestleMania card, Daniel Bryan charged the ring, demanding Triple H grant him so. Furious at the continuous defiance of Daniel Bryan, Triple H appeared to confront him.

However, Daniel Bryan did not come alone. As a full army of fans joined him in storming the ring, thus creating the well-remembered “Occupy Raw” segment where Daniel Bryan challenged Triple H to a match at WrestleMania XXX, with the winner being added to Randy Orton and Batista’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship match that same night in the main event.

Falls Count Anywhere

Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus are officially scheduled to have their Steel Cage match this Saturday at Payback. However, before then, Becky Lynch has one more thing to settle in the form of Trish Stratus’ disciple: Zoey Stark. They are scheduled to have yet another match tonight. But this time, it’s Falls Count Anywhere.

Rules like these just seem to encourage interference from Trish Stratus in some form or another. And we’ve already seen her do whatever she can to bend the rules. So who knows what the WWE Hall of Famer has up her sleeve just days away from her first-ever Steel Cage match. Can Zoey Stark manage to double down and defeat Becky Lynch again? Or will The Man roll into Payback riding high?

Have You Seen This Tag Team Partner?

Tomasso Ciampa last week talked about needing to find himself after being back from injury but not really getting anything done. As he said, “Sometimes, you got to Do It Yourself”. A very obvious nod to the name of his tag team with fellow NXT legend, Johnny Gargano.

As we await an inevitable DIY reunion, Tomasso Ciampa still finds himself dealing with Bronson Reed. Reed already defeated Tomasso Ciampa last month. Can Ciampa really “do it himself” and get it done this time?

The Last Stretch

Gunther is just 10 days away from breaking the Honky Tonk Man’s record as Intercontinental Champion. And what is likely set to be his final title defense before that record is broken is now set for Payback as Chad Gable gets another crack at the Championship after Gable was able to defeat Gunther via Count-Out last week.

Before that match takes place though, Chad Gable has a match with Gunther’s right-hand man, Ludwig Kaiser first. Also, it’s interesting to note, if WWE chooses to do it. Or if the other party agrees to it, it’s Memphis. None other than the Honky Tonk Man himself resides nearby.

Chase In The Tag Team Division

It seems that as Drew McIntyre and Matt Riddle rather unexpectedly have found success as a tag team, other parties are similarly chasing a potential shot at the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships. After last week, we have The New Day set to take on The Viking Raiders. They’ve met several times before. But it’s their first time as a part of the WWE Raw brand.

All that, however, nothing seems to be announced for The Judgment Day or Cody Rhodes yet. We all know they will without a doubt find themselves being a part of Raw tonight—all that and more as we’re set for the last WWE Raw before Payback.
