Women’s Royal Rumble Match (Royal Rumble 2018)
There are many gimmick matches that WWE employs, but none are more important than the Royal Rumble. It is the brainchild of WWE and has become the beacon gimmick match as important as any event WWE has to offer. For years, it was a property of the men of WWE, but that all changed in 2018 when WWE held the first Women’s Royal Rumble match.
This Royal Rumble match meant so much to the WWE machine. It signified that the men no longer had a monopoly over the big-time gimmick matches. The women’s division had become deep enough for the company to run a match of this magnitude.
That type of depth was unthinkable a few years before, and each woman put on an incredible performance. We also got some fantastic surprises with Trish Stratus, Lita, Molly Holly, and Vickie Guerrero. It was a celebration of WWE’s past, present, and future, and there is no way that it could have gone better for the women of WWE.
There was also the cherry on top of Asuka winning the Royal Rumble. It was the right call to push the megastar to the moon. She was the best wrestler in the match and the one who gained the most from winning.
WWE Evolution 2018
This is a bit of a cop out, as we are talking about an entire PLE as opposed to a particular match, but when it’s something as historic as this PLE was, it must be mentioned.
For years, women were lucky to get one match on a card, let alone a match that was taken seriously. The women’s matches were commonly referred to as the bathroom break matches. Taking place before the main event, the crowd was usually dead for these matches, and WWE didn’t book them very well.
When this all-women’s event was booked, it included some incredible matches that kept fans stuck to their seats, as opposed to running for the bathroom. On that night, we witnessed Hall of Famers and current stars go to battle in some of the best matches of 2018.
Highlights included Becky Lynch taking on Charlotte Flair in an incredible Last Woman Standing match, and a must-see match for the NXT Women’s Championship between Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane. Everything about Evolution showed how much WWE had progressed as a company. The Women of World Wrestling Entertainment had achieved the ultimate success, and there wasn’t a man in sight to take their thunder.
