The Final Bell: Ranking the 5 Best WWE Retirement Stipulation Matches

  1. Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 24, 2008)

In November 2007, Vince McMahon handed Ric Flair a career-defining ultimatum: the next match he lost would be his last. This set the stage for a dramatic months-long “farewell tour” where fans felt like each of the roughly twenty subsequent matches could be Flair’s last. Ultimately, McMahon decided that the man who would face Flair in this high-stakes showdown at WrestleMania would be none other than Shawn Michaels.

Michaels idolized Flair, making this matchup deeply difficult for “The Showstopper” to be the one to retire the man he idolized growing up. During the buildup, Michaels delivered a promo comparing Flair to “Old Yeller,” a dog who, despite being a legend, needed to be put out of his misery. This shifted the magnitude of the match, transforming it from a traditional contest into a looming tragedy.

Despite being 59 years old, “The Nature Boy” delivered a vintage performance against the man who was once his student. While the entire match is considered iconic, the final moments are what it is most remembered for. With tears in his eyes, Michaels mouthed the words “I’m sorry, I love you” before delivering his iconic Sweet Chin Music, winning the match, and ending the legendary career of Ric Flair.
