AEW Dynamite Results from AEW Dynamite Tonight (1/28/25)

Kenny Omega defeated Rocky Romero

Romero came in swinging, but Omega quickly dispatched him. Referee Rick Knox found himself in the crosshairs when Romero used him as a shield. Omega blasted Romero away with a High Boot. Unwisely, Romero postured to the crowd, setting Omega to demolish him with a V-Trigger and Snapdragon Suplex. A One-Winged Angel packed Romero away for the 1, 2, 3.

Post-match: Tony Schiavone asked Omega how he felt about Revolution and Grand Slam: Australia coming up. Omega reiterated that he still felt really good and would take out anyone he loved or hated to get there. Hangman Adam Page greeted him, praising his return and work ethic. However, Page implied that the next AEW Men’s World Champion wouldn’t be Omega, Andrade el Idolo, or Swerve Strickland. Strickland joined the duo, also positioning himself as someone who could and should be the next champion. Omega suggested Strickland was looking for a fight, which Strickland confirmed. Don Callis interrupted the tense situation as he was decorated with rapturous boos. Callis informed Page, Omega, and Strickland that Andrade will surpass all of them to become the next champ. Omega wasted no second, chasing his former manager to the back.

(Tony Schiavone’s tie and shoes looked like Shrek from the hit movie “Shrek” vomited on them. Otherwise, a fine squash to give Omega a glow. I’m not a fan of conveyor belt promos, so I’m going to have to dock points for this.)

Harley Cameron hyped up Kris Statlander

Ahead of Statlander’s AEW Women’s World Championship bout with challenger Thekla, Cameron stated the champ’s strengths. Statlander and Cameron agreed that it would be easy work.

Jon Moxley defeated Ace Austin

Moxley immediately sent Austin down with a big boot and chopped him in the corner. Austin usurped him momentarily for a crucifix pin. A clunky Casadora from Austin hurled Moxley outside. On the top rope, Moxley and Austin struggled to rise to their feet following a Superplex. Moxley regained the upper hand with a King Kong Lariat. Austin had the crowd decidedly on his side after a kick dazed Moxley something fierce. A Cutter and a Death Rider halted Austin wholesale, leaving him prone for the three-count.

Post-match: Konosuke Takeshita met Moxley in the ring. They inaudibly shared words. As Takeshita departed the ring, Jake Doyle and Mark Davis assaulted Moxley, continuing the Death Riders/Don Callis Family war.

(Austin has some great acrobatic and athletic skills, but that clumsy Casadora took me out a bit. I must admit, though, the rest of his performance rocked.)

Mark Briscoe (c) defeated El Clon for the TNT Championship

Clon superceded all of Briscoe’s moves, toppling him with an elbow strike. Briscoe unleashed hellish chops to the luchador. Clon thwarted a chair-assisted tope by sliding in the ring and tossing Briscoe’s steel chair outside. Briscoe trounced the otherwise dodgy Clon with a lariat and a cannonball to the outside. Ensnaring Briscoe with the ring apron cloth, Clon concussed him with a sliding dropkick. Clon spilled to the outside courtesy of Briscoe’s chop atop the turnbuckle. Champion and challenger decapitated the other with a simultaneous clothesline. Clon survived a Jay Driller unfazed. Clon’s top rope stomp punctured Briscoe’s midsection. A roll-up pin secured a successful title retention.

Post-match: Briscoe encouraged newcomers to challenge for his title, so long as they didn’t belong to the Don Callis Family. The arena darkened. Tomasso Ciampa made his surprise debut.

(Briscoe made Clon, and I want that to be stated first and foremost. Great match. But the conversation will undoubtedly center around Ciampa’s debut. It was a shock, given his wish to wrestle on the indies and possibly NJPW. But he can do both here, so pleasant surprise.)

Kazuchika Okada apologized to Kyle Fletcher

Okada admitted his wrongdoings at Worlds End, which cost Fletcher his Continental Classic match in the semifinals against Jon Moxley. Fletcher accepted, citing that it takes a big man to take accountability for his mistakes. They shook hands.

MJF insulted Brody King

MJF mourned having to occupy Texas. King came out in a nice, modest white sweater. MJF brought up King’s AEW past with House of Black and the fact that he’s a liberal who doesn’t look as such. Accusing King of being “nothing more than a follower”, he was met with barks from the crowd. King retorted that he and Tony Khan set up an Eliminator Match for MJF’s AEW Men’s World Championship on February 4.

Kris Statlander (c) defeated Thekla for the AEW Women’s World Championship

Statlander absorbed slaps from Thekla like they were nothing. She sent her tumbling with a Guillotine. A vertical suplex and toss into the steel steps made things worse for the Toxic Spider. Thekla rebounded with a kick and stomp. She maintained her momentum with a Spider Suplex and a later Flying Crossbody to the champ outside. Statlander chopped her opponent down, eating several punches. Thekla baited Statlander with spit before she locked her in an octopus stretch. Usurping a Staturday Night Fever, Thekla reversed it into a roll-up. Her agile response time avoided a few stiff attacks, but one last Staturday Night Fever sealed the deal, landing Statlander the win.

(Thekla had a great January, even in this defeat. She’s stood out and even outshines her Triangle of Madness partners at this time of writing.)

Don Callis addressed Konosuke Takeshita & Kyle Fletcher

Callis urged Takeshita to forgive Kazuchika Okada before moving onto Jon Moxley’s Continental Championship. Moving his attention to Kyle Fletcher, Callis suggested that the young Australian would reclaim his old title sooner or later. Upon finding out Fletcher forgave Okada, he marched off in disappointment.

The Demand assaulted Jack Perry

Ricochet taunted Perry before revealing that GOA had him locked in their grip. Perry momentarily attacked them. The trio gained an advantage over him before Toa Liona and Bishop Kaun powerbombed him through a table.

FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) defeated Davis & Doyle (Mark Davis & Jake Doyle)

Doyle flung Wheeler around and charged against him to keep him down. He and Davis mowed Wheeler down again. Wheeler drove Davis into his corner, allowing for a Harwood tag. Harwood and Davis chopped each other, but Davis was strong enough to hurl Harwood outside. Wheeler caught a rampaging Doyle with a surprise Spinebuster. Harwood dropped Davis with a side suplex from the top rope, while Wheeler landed a splash to the weakened Aussie.

Davis engaged Harwood in a chokehold. Jon Moxley and his Death Riders sauntered outside and struck Davis with his Continental Championship. FTR took advantage with a pinfall.

(This could’ve easily been a moment to crown D&D as champs, but given the Don Callis Family’s war with the Death Riders, it’s easy to see why this outcome happened. It’s been reported that Doyle tore his bicep during this match, so best wishes and speedy recovery to him.)

Orange Cassidy and Wheeler Yuta’s confrontation

Cassidy insulted Yuta’s place in the Death Riders and appearance. Yuta responded with similar physical criticism of Cassidy, to which Marina Shafir joined by pulling his hair. Toni Storm immediately came to Cassidy’s aid, leading to Storm & Cassidy being split from Yuta & Shafir.

Andrade el Idolo defeated Swerve Strickland

Idolo gained control, toppling Strickland with his shoulder block. The pair reached an impasse after a speedy and reactive clash. Strickland sought a Swerve Stomp, but Idolo was lal too ready for it. Instead, Strickland gained leverage with a hurricanrana. Idolo narrowly eluded a tope, sending Strickland into steel stairs. Idolo repeated his selfie spot from the January 25 Collision with another woman, who gave him her phone number. On top of the world, Idolo returned to drain Strickland with a headlock. Idolo displaced Strickland with a Tornado Tope.

A Death Valley Driver on the apron finally gave a frustrated Strickland an inch, edgewise. Perched on the barricade, Idolo sent Strickland crashing on his back, while he himself landed on his sensitive nether region. Strickland smashed Idolo with a back elbow, which the latter returned in kind. Idolo sent Strickland plummeting with a top rope hurricanrana and a double-knee to the face. Referee Aubrey Edwards was distracted by Idolo’s wrist grab, leaving Strickland to fall to a sneak DM finish. That’s actually Idolo’s finisher move. He will face Kenny Omega in Las Vegas on the February 4 episode of Dynamite.

Post-match: Backstage, Kenny Omega addressed MJF, confident he’d be next to challenge MJF for the Men’s World Championship. Idolo met MJF backstage, wanting to slap MJF, but he was willing to wait to challenge for the title. MJF resumed his route to his vehicle, but Hangman Adam Page temporarily stopped him.

(It’s funny that a non-title match main evented on a night of three defenses. Yet this one overdelivered, which is incredible to say, considering the talents involved. Insane chemistry.)

Final Thoughts

Best Dynamite this year. The Ciampa debut, the championship matches, and Andrade’s victory encapsulated the type of caliber that should be on most Dynamites. Hopefully, Jake Doyle recovers quickly. That said, I wonder if there will be a follow-up soon to the Rascalz debuting, soon in the ring. While none of the titles changed, everyone looked good tonight, and that’s hard to accomplish. The most sensible booking in North America in one night.
