WWE Survivor Series: WarGames is only a week away. The PLE will take over San Diego’s Petco Park on November 30, making it the first installment to be held outdoors in a stadium. It will also be the 39th show under the Survivor Series banner.
Four matches, including two WarGames bouts, have been confirmed for the show. With a week remaining, WWE could add another match or two. Nonetheless, the build towards Survivor Series: WarGames has been solid, and excitement levels are high.
In celebration of the rich history of Survivor Series and the hype heading into the show, let’s take a look at four intriguing matchups heading into this year’s show.
#4. The WWE Championship Has Not Been Contested at the Event Since 2019
The last time the coveted WWE Championship was defended at Survivor Series was in 2019, when Brock Lesnar successfully defended the championship against Rey Mysterio in a quick title bout.
In the following two editions of Survivor Series, WWE’s focus shifted to brand supremacy, resulting in champion vs. champion matches. Drew McIntyre, WWE Champion, faced Roman Reigns, Universal Champion, in 2020. At Survivor Series 2011, Reigns, still the Universal Champion, battled WWE Champion Big E.
Heading into Survivor Series 2022, Reigns was the Undisputed Unified WWE Universal Champion, and he competed in the Men’s WarGames match. The following year, the Tribal Chief sat out of the event. Last year, Cody Rhodes, the Unified WWE Champion, also missed the show.
The American Nightmare will also compete in WarGames this year. Thus, for the sixth consecutive year, the WWE Championship will not be defended at Survivor Series.
