WWE Hall of Famer, ECW legend, and alumnus. Rob Van Dam recently revealed in an interview with TMZ about a failed plan to have one last match with John Cena. The pair wrestled an iconic match at ECW One Night Stand in 2006, where in Rob Van Dam secured his first and only WWE Championship in his time with North America’s biggest promotion.
When asked about John Cena’s Farewell Tour, Van Dam said the following. “I was talking to them (WWE), there was a lot of interest. Without giving away too many details, we were probably gonna do it. And then I broke my heels.”
The Whole F’n Show suffered a double heel fracture in April during Major League Wrestling’s Battle Riot VII. Prior to that, RVD had not wrestled in a year, last winning a four-way elimination match on AEW Rampage.
Cena’s Farewell tour has received mixed reviews thus far. Whilst there has been negativity on social media regarding his infamous heel run, the live crowd reactions have been nothing short of positive.

The record-breaking 17-time World Champion has wrestled numerous former rivals, including CM Punk and Randy Orton. He is also scheduled to compete against a returning Brock Lesnar at the upcoming Wrestlepalooza event, rounding out this tour of John Cena reigniting some of his best feuds over his illustrious 20+ year career.
Whilst Van Dam was never a genuine rival to Cena, the match between them at ECW One Night Stand was extraordinary. Both men’s styles complimented each other, with their demeanors further giving each one a distinguishing trait that people could get behind or outright reject. The atmosphere was hostile on the 2006 edition of ECW One Night Stand, and the fans made it known who they wanted to win.

The “IF CENA WINS WE RIOT” fan sign is one of the most famous in wrestling history. Thankfully, there was no need for a riot as Van Dam captured his only WWE Championship.
“The Greatest of All Time” has seven contractual appearances left, despite announcing that last week’s SmackDown would be the final one of his career, including unannounced matches at the Premium Live Event’s Crown Jewel and Survivor Series. His 23-year career will culminate in a retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
