ZSJ Gets One Over Takeshita
IWGP World Heavyweight champion Zack Sabre Jr. picked up a big win over Konosuke Takeshita in the main event. Also the defending G1 winner, ZSJ won his second straight match and went up to six points.
Although he lost, The Alpha still looked great during the match, proving once again that he can go toe-to-toe against one of the best in the world. It was only his second loss in the tournament in five matches and he’s currently tied with Sabre at six points.
Drilla Foil Narita’s Plans, O-Khan Sinks ELP
Drilla Moloney eked out a hard-fought victory over Ren Narita, who needed a win to sit atop the B Block. Great O-Khan beat El Phantasmo for the fourth time in five singles matches. These wins by both competitors caused a four-way jam at eight points with Narita and YOSHI-HASHI.
Breaking it down, Moloney’s win means he is the block leader because he has the tiebreaker over O-Khan, and O-Khan has the tiebreaker over YOSHI-HASHI, and YOSHI-HASHI over Narita. Competing in the G1 for the first time, he’s having a much better showing so far than their leader in the A Block.
Meanwhile, NJPW World TV champ El Phantasmo is still at four points, having lost four matches.
Takagi Tastes First Decisive Win Against Umino
Shingo Takagi finally has a decision win in this year’s G1 after beating Shota Umino in the semi-main event. His only points prior came by Gabe Kidd’s forfeiture.
Takagi now has four points while Umino stays at six in a three-way tie with ZSJ and Takeshita. Takagi has also beaten Umino three times in five matches, twice in three encounters this year alone.
Tournament action continues on August 1, with the A Block bannering the show main evented by Hiroshi Tanahashi and Yuya Uemura.
