Some Azteca Lucha Interesting Facts

Hammerstone Makes a Statement

Last night, Alex Hammerstone defeated former MLW World Champion Satoshi Kojima. After a brilliant comeback at Battle Riot VII, Hammerstone made clear that he wanted the MLW Championship back around his waist.

The match itself is not the most interesting one to watch; it is pretty classic and slow-paced. Alex Hammerstone is back home, and he wants to be The Man in The High Castle. For years, he and Jacob Fatu had built this company’s legacy.

In this new era of MLW, with new faces like Donovan Dijak, Riddle, and all the CMLL Luchadores, Hammerstone has a chance to create new momentum. Rightfully, when Joe Dombrowski interviewed Hammerstone at the entrance area, he said he feels like the embodiment of MLW. He grabbed a U.S. flag and wrapped it around his neck.

Then, we saw Ultimo Guerrero approach Hammerstone, and Alex said he had no problem with him, only to attack Guerrero from behind. Hammerstone held up the National Title in one hand and the US flag in another.

Lucha Libre Extravaganza

I was saying it at Battle Riot VII, but thanks to a fruitful partnership with CMLL, MLW has been offering the fans the best of Lucha Libre. Some spots were really fantastic, like The Panthers doing stereo planchas to the floor or Ultimo Guerrero hitting a top-rope splash on both Zandokan Jr. and Barbario Cavernario. Hechicero and Guerrero Maya Jr. vs. Esfinge and Atlantis is a true must-watch.

Myron Reed is Back

Azteca 13 came to the ring for an unscheduled match. Suddenly, coming out of nowhere,  Myron Reed, who hasn’t been here in a few years, jumped in the ring and attacked him. He got on the mic and said, “The Young GOAT is back and justice will be served.”

For those who don’t know, Myron Reed is a former 3-time MLW Middleweight Champion. Like Hammerstone, he represents this FUSION era of MLW. After spending some time in the indies and at TNA Wrestling, Reed is back home. Huge surprise of the night and another smart addition to the roster.

Mads Krügger Almost Made it

Mads Krügger tried to cash in his Gravity Gamble briefcase. During the Dijak/Riddle match, he attempted to attack Matt Riddle, but Riddle caused Krügger to hit Dijak in the head. Riddle ended up tapping out Dijak for the win. With all the respect I have for Dijak and the lack of respect I have for Riddle, Krügger saved the match that was turning into a big mess.

It was clear that Donovan Dijak was on his way to win the title, so Mads Krügger only had to target Dijak and pin Riddle. That didn’t end up like this, but as Dijak is angry at Krügger, we will have the chance to see a huge match. Riddle will be defeated, maybe by Dijak or Krügger. It may not have happened last night, but one day,

Ikuro Kwon is a Genius

At Battle Riot VII, Ikuro Kwon stole the belt Mistico was vacating. So, because Mistico won the match, Ikuro Kwon snapped Místico’s mask before taking his mask off. Despite the loss, Kwon stood tall with the MLW Middleweight Title.

Making this match the main event of the night was a very interesting choice. Once you saw the match, you understood why. It was made to steal the show, and it did. Not to tell you all, Mistico and Templario hit stereo superkicks on Kwon to open.

Then, we saw a top-rope Spanish Fly, a pop-up neckbreaker, a Canadian Destroyer, and a Swanton Bomb, among many others. Some Lucha Libre magic, spiced with Contra Unit’s madness.

The Nygma’s Point of View

CMLL x MLW Azteca Lucha was like two shows in one. The MLW roster, filled with Americans, was almost entirely not involved with the Mexican stars, and vice versa. It was like we had two promotions under the same umbrella.  Hammerstone’s attack on Guerrero is set to start new fights and match-ups between these two groups of wrestlers.

I can’t wait for Dijak vs Mads Krügger and all the MLW War Chamber matches announced during the show (airing on June 7). Like CW Anderson and Bobby Fish told Brett Ryan Gosselin, “you don’t come out the same” from War Chamber. As far as when Matt Riddle is going to lose the World Championship, I would swim the Atlantic Ocean myself if it wasn’t happening fast. May the Nygma be with you.
