AEW Dynamite Results

Commentary welcomed viewers to this Dynamite airing in Illinois. Excalibur announced that the Death Riders attacked Jay White, therefore leaving him unable to compete in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.

Swerve Strickland and Willow Nightingale defeated Jon Moxley and Marina Shafir

Halfway through Strickland’s entrance, he and Nightingale were beset with violence by Moxley and Shafir. They tried to set up a table, yet Nightingale dragged Shafir into the ring. The bell rang, and she kept the Death Rider at bay. Moxley, meanwhile, thrust Strickland all over the place. Moxley tried to intercept Nightingale, who slapped him in return. He threatened her with a Piledriver, met by Strickland, who trapped Shafir in a hold, leading Moxley to relent. The crowd became unglued at the possibility of intergender action. Later, Shafir loosely powerbombed Nightingale through the table from earlier. Firmly in control, Shafir and Moxley scratched at the back of Strickland on the top turnbuckle. Nightingale mightily dropped them all with a Superplex to a huge ovation. Nightingale nearly won the bout with a loud Spinebuster. Shafir locked Nightingale with a triangle choke, to which she slammed her onto Moxley, who clutched Strickland in his own rear-naked choke.

Aiming his shot at Moxley, Strickland soared for a House Call. Shafir, however, took the bullet instead. Nightingale caught Moxley and sent him through a table. She sent Shafir into the mat with a Powerbomb for the 3-count victory. Then, Moxley slithered into the ring, effectively flattening her with a DDT before fleeing the arena.

Incredible opener. Moments like these will come a long way in implementing or further restricting intergender matches on national television. We’ll see which will be which.

Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Bracket Revealed

Will Ospreay, Kevin Knight, Brody King, Konosuke Takeshita, Mark Briscoe, Kyle Fletcher, and Hangman Adam Page are all set to compete for the Owen Hart Cup. In Jay White’s place, a Wild Card entry was announced.

“Timeless” Toni Storm defeated Penelope Ford

Despite Ford having the early advantage, Storm withstood her tactics. Ford avoided a hip attack and assaulted Storm against a turnbuckle; she followed up by taunting her. Irate, Storm fought back by biting Ford’s lower lip, and consequently ended by licking the champion’s upper lip. Yet Storm remained undeterred; she landed a successful hip attack. Then she followed with a DDT. Ford landed Storm on her knees with a Gutbuster. Storm accordingly ended the match with a Storm Zero for the win. Megan Bayne clapped down the entrance ramp as Ford used her for stability while Storm boasted in the ring.

I wonder who will be the one to turn against the other first—Megan Bayne or Penelope Ford?

Swerve Strickland backstage interview

Praising Willow Nightingale’s temerity and grit in the opening match, Strickland threatened he’d have his hands on Moxley at the night’s end.

Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Bracket Revealed

A graphic showed the following participants: Jamie Hayter, Billie Starkz, Thunder Rosa, Kris Statlander, Julia Hart, Mercedes Mone, Harley Cameron, and Athena. They all vie for the finals of the Owen Hart Cup on May 25 at All In.

Hurt Syndicate and MJF segment

Before Bobby Lashley could speak, MJF sauntered to the ring. Positing the Syndicate as helpful allies to regaining the AEW World  Championship, he continued berating the audience. Testing Lashley’s patience, MJF placed his hand on his shoulder, stating that he needs MJF. Lashley proclaimed he wouldn’t hurt MJF out of respect for MVP. He elaborated further that the Hurt Syndicate doesn’t need him and ordered him to leave the ring. Far more peaceful than last time.

Learning Tree squash match

Demanding a departing Bobby Lashley sit and watch him and Keith demolish their opponents, Big Bill climbed into the ring. He and Keith dominantly thwarted the competition. Bill chokeslammed one of the talents, staring a hole through Lashley as he got the 3-count.

Mercedes Mone and Harley Cameron backstage segment with Renee Paquette

As Mone prepared to discuss her plans to win the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, Cameron interrupted with her Mone puppet. She proposed teaming up with her, humorously adding a very long tag team name. Mone stormed off as a graphic advertised the two teaming up against Athena and Julia Hart on the next episode of AEW Collision.

Will Ospreay and Kevin Knight defeated Blake Christian and Lee Johnson

Ospreay and Christian traded their fast-paced offense, with Ospreay easily gaining momentum. Knight followed up with a splash. Johnson played equalizer, tossing Ospreay out of the ring. Working in tandem with Christian, Johnson bullied Knight. Ospreay and Knight then flew out to their opponents like majestic eagles. Christian dropped Knight to the mat and plummeted Ospreay to the outside to allow himself to isolate Knight from hope. Christian and Johnson rushed to clothesline Knight, but he easily leapt over them. A 450 Stomp by Christian took the wind out of Ospreay. Knight stacked Johnson onto Christian and dropkicked them down. A Springboard Lariat gave Knight the 3-count victory as Ospreay re-entered the ring.

Post-match, Tony Schiavone announced that Knight and Ospreay’s match for the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Quarterfinal would take place on AEW Dynasty.

Knight’s taking very well to AEW. He’s fit right in like a PWG hopeful from the early 2010s. Not only that, but the company is already viewing highly of him enough to trust him in a match with one of their biggest stars in Ospreay. He’s got the rocket.

The Opps backstage promo

Samoa Joe invited Katsuyori Shibata onscreen. Then, he spoke his intentions at AEW Dynasty, that they would search for future competition. He advised not to let The Opps “catch them lacking”.

Brody King defeated Lance Archer

King and Archer clashed like giants, yet Archer avoided a first Cannonball. He succeeded on a second attempt. As soon as King gained control, Don Callis tripped him up. Archer flung King to the steel steps. In the ring, King toppled Archer with a Flying Crossbody before crushing him with a Senton. Archer stole that Flying Crossbody for further dominance, in addition to a Chokeslam. Countering another Chokeslam, King earned a 3-count after a thunderous lariat sent Archer packing.

Two titans clashing, seemingly evenly matched. With Callis in tow, King had an uphill battle and succeeded. The simple need for big man violence is an infectious one, and these two delivered.

Cope defeated Claudio Castagnoli

Castagnoli forewent all the proceedings, unleashing a torrent of strikes on the Rated-R Superstar. The veteran Cope wrenched control of the match, slamming Castagnoli around the barricades. The pair traded lariats with Castagnoli maintaining wrist control. Once Castagnoli nearly re-entered the ring, Cope speared him to the outside. Cope drove Castagnoli down with a Flying Bulldog. The Swiss wrestler’s Swing dizzied Cope, but could not put him away. Sharpshooter engaged, Castagnoli cranked on the legs of Cope in the middle of the ring. As Cope crawled out of it, Catagnoli clutched him in a Crossface; Cope countered with one of his own. Tossed outside the barricade, Cope desperately stumbled into the ring, walking right into a lariat. Cope hoped for a Spear, thwarted only by Castagnoli’s Uppercut. Finally, Cope ended the match via a Spear for a 3-Count.

Almost inconsequential, aside from Cope getting his lick back from at least one Death Rider member. However, this made for a thrilling segue into the closing segment.

Swerve Strickland backstage interview with Renee Paquette

Strickland concluded a spat with Prince Nana and attempted to leave before Hangman Page yelled at him. Vowing Strickland would never hold the title as long as he was around, he said that Strickland deserved to have his house burned down. Strickland agreed, so Page stormed off. The Death Riders ambushed Strickland, dragging him to the arena and the ring where the defeated Catagnoli joined them. The five Death Riders held Strickland immobile. Castagnoli then powerbombed Strickland onto a mat laden with broken glass that Moxley had laid out. The show ended with Strickland sitting up, watching in pure rage.

Great segment. Strickland is every bit of a monster that the Death Riders are, but is he truly alone? We’ll have to wait until Sunday, perhaps.

Closing thoughts

Nearly every match on Dynasty is all the more compelling to wait for. Everything made sense and the matches were of the quality we’ll be conditioned to enjoy. That’s a good thing, that’s a positive. Dynasty looks to be a blast.
