The wrestling world is buzzing with anticipation for the return of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. The show was a staple of WWE programming during the boom period of the Golden Era. Aside from the regular PLEs of the era, it was nice as it included many matchups that we didn’t get to see on other programs.
WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event returning will tug at many heartstrings from fans of a certain age, but WWE is putting its best foot forward to build a new fanbase. There are some great matches on tap for Saturday night, but who in those matches will emerge victorious? Let’s look at the best options.
WWE Championship Match: Cody Rhodes vs Kevin Owens
The friends turned enemies’ angle between these two men has been nothing short of fantastic. Owens has been putting in some of the best heel work of his career while Rhodes has finally been given an angle that he can sink his teeth into. Their promo work has been incredible and added more fuel to the fire that will be lit on Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Their previous work, at Bash at Berlin, was a great match but one that seemed stunted. It looked like both men were holding back. Well, we can expect nothing to be held back for their next match. Owens and Rhodes even hinted at as much during their back-and-forth.
It would be truly interesting to see WWE swerve the world and have Owens win here. Lord knows he needs a big win, but this won’t be the avenue in which it happens. Rhodes will be carrying the WWE Championship into Wrestlemania so look for him to get the win here.
Winner: Cody Rhodes
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Gunther vs Finn Balor vs Damian Priest
Finn Balor taking on Gunther was never going to be a one-on-one match. Balor had inserted himself into every match involving Gunther and Damian Priest, so it makes complete sense for WWE to make this a triple threat, thus avoiding interference.
This should be a fantastic triple-threat match. The three men have been intertwined, at the top of the card, since Summerslam and this is the perfect way to blow things off. It should be a very entertaining match that will involve some great spots.
Gunther has already been a part of a 5-star triple threat, and here’s hoping that this match will live up to that standard.
Gunther should be the one walking away the victor here. Priest and Balor will be a great hurdle, but his reign is just getting started and it would be silly to take the strap off him now.
Winner: Gunther
Women’s World Championship Match: Liv Morgan vs Iyo Sky
In terms of build this match has received very little heading into Saturday. Iyo Sky had won a #1 Contenders Battle Royal sometime ago but only a little has been spoken about it.
She was opposite Liv Morgan in WarGames, but that match was more about Rhea Ripley’s revenge tour. A tag match was booked for Monday Night Raw but that was too little too late to build momentum for the match.
Build aside there is no doubt that this will be an entertaining contest. Both are great workers, and Sky has one of the more entertaining move sets in the company. No doubt she will sprinkle in some exhilarating combos for us to see.
Liv Morgan is going to win this match. She has the muscle in her corner, and WWE will be looking to make her eventual defeat a bigger deal than it would be on Saturday.
Winner: Liv Morgan
Finals of the Women’s United States Championship Tournament
The creation of a Women’s secondary championship was a great idea by WWE. It shows further faith in the Women’s division and will create a larger spotlight for some women who don’t get as much as they should.
Michin and Chelsea Green is a great matchup for the finals. These are two of the more underappreciated women on the roster and there is no doubt that they will be able to put together a very entertaining contest for the Long Island crowd.
Michin has obtained a ton of momentum, as of late, but please WWE let Chelsea Green win the strap here. Green is one of the best parts of the women’s division and the crowd laps up everything that she does.
She has put in her work and deserves to walk away the winner here. Also, it is in her husbands back yard so the crowd will most assuredly pop huge for a win.
Winner: Chelsea Green
Drew McIntyre vs. Sami Zayn
Drew McIntyre is the best type of heel. His justification for his actions, while vicious, is justified in the grand scheme of things. It has been awesome to see him develop, and it looks like members of the OG Bloodline are next in his crosshairs.
His attack on Sami Zayn was a great first start. They will no doubt have a superb mini program with their matches being fantastic. This Saturday expect the two to steal the show with the perfect combination of Zayn’s babyface fighting against the vicious heel in McIntyre.
This looks like the first stop on a path towards Roman Reigns for McIntyre. His promo, on Raw, targeted the OG Bloodline and Sami is only the first hurdle. McIntyre should get the nod here as his journey has just begun.
Winner: Drew McIntyre
