Match Point: Gunther vs. Bálor vs. Priest (Saturday Night's Main Event)

Match Point: Gunther vs. Bálor vs. Priest (Saturday Night’s Main Event)

Gunther defends his World Heavyweight Championship against both Finn Bálor and Damian Priest at Saturday Night’s Main Event in an unpredictable title bout. Bálor and Priest have both been synonymous with Gunther’s championship reign whether “The Ring General” wants to admit it or not.

Let’s look at how we got to this mega triple-threat match, and why it’s one of the most interesting matches on the card for the nostalgic Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Gunther vs. Bálor: Will It Ever Happen?

In February 2020, Gunther was fatter and called WALTER. But not everything has changed. He was also – as he is today – a dominant champion.

WALTER was approaching a year as NXT UK Champion and needed a new challenger having already defeated Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, Joe Coffey, and Dave Mastiff. At WWE Worlds Collide, “The Ring General” and his Imperium stable defeated Adam Cole’s Undisputed Era.

Simply put, WALTER was the most interesting wrestler on the planet. He was certainly the most successful wrestler from Europe and Ireland since Finn Bálor. WWE announced NXT UK Takeover: Dublin and began building towards the dream match of Bálor vs. WALTER. Then, the global pandemic happened and the whole thing was off.

Four years later, Bálor turned on Priest at WWE SummerSlam, helping Gunther take the title from him. Gunther has grown sick of hearing Bálor claiming he only holds the World Heavyweight Championship because of his interference and finally agreed to a match with Bálor.

Now, a slimmer and better-named Gunther was fighting over a more prestigious belt, and the dream match was back on. Until Priest got involved in Bálor and Gunther’s brawl on WWE Raw on Monday, we were finally about to get a match four years in the waiting. But after Adam Pearce realized there was no chance Priest would stay out of the Saturday Night’s Main Event match, he added him to it.

Guess we will have to keep waiting for Bálor vs. Gunther. By the time it finally happens, Gunther might have another new name!

Why Priest Should Be In The Saturday Night’s Main Event Match?

But, let’s be honest. Priest should be in the match on Saturday. Bálor cost Priest the championship against Gunther at WWE SummerSlam and prevented him from winning the gold back at WWE Survivor Series: War Games last month.

Bálor’s interference – again – led to Gunther beating Priest at Survivor Series. If Bálor deserves a shot at Gunther for inadvertently being a huge factor in “The Ring General” holding the title, Priest definitely deserves to be in the match for being the person screwed out of holding the World Heavyweight Championship twice.
