Preview: AEW Rampage (06/30/23) – Claudio Castagnoli vs. Komander, ROH World Title Match

AEW had their Hamilton debut this week on AEW Dynamite and will continue from Hamilton for the rest of the week as AEW Rampage was taped following Dynamite and AEW Collision will also be taped the next day in the same venue. Let’s see what’s in store.

ROH World Title Battle

A staple of Rampage is its more open-match typing as compared to Dynamite. Where most matches are meant to follow a storyline pattern. Tonight, Claudio Castagnoli, one of the best technical wrestlers out there, takes on the aerial spectacle Komander and will defend the Ring Of Honor World Championship against him.

This comes a day after Claudio Castagnoli faced off against Chuck Taylor of the Best Friends in ROH’s HonorClub show. It seemed Claudio was a little too busy with his feud with The Elite. But this week, he works overtime to make up for it. Meanwhile, Komander has always been a sight to behold whenever in action. These two can have a fantastic and distinct match. Let’s see if they match up.

Johnny TV Premieres

Call him whatever you want. But it seems he has a firm name now for AEW. The former John Morrison is now #AllElite. Now going as Johnny TV, he debuted by aligning himself with QTV and now teams up with the group’s leader, QT Marshall to take on Matt Hardy and Isaiah Kassidy, or “Brother Zay.”

For Matt Hardy and Johnny, this would be the first time they worked together on a Friday, on TV, since 2009. When they paired up on SmackDown after Matt Hardy’s heel turn was undone following a feud with his brother Jeff Hardy.

International Clash

An interesting women’s match is set as one of Japan’s most successful independent wrestlers in Hikaru Shida is set to take on the Canadian that called Mexico her home for many years in Taya Valkyrie. Taya may be returning to Canada, however, she has yet to compete in her home province of British Columbia. Can she get back to her winning ways or will it be Hikaru Shida making the step forward?

Spears Comes Home

Only 50 km away from his birthplace, Shawn Spears makes his return to AEW TV yet again when they make a stop in Canada. This time, he’s set to take on The Blade in a one-on-one match. Shawn Spears was last seen when AEW made its debut in Canada this past October.

He was re-introduced as a babyface and aligned with FTR. He explained his difficulties as his mother passed away while expecting the birth of his child. Is Spears finally ready to make a full comeback or will this be another one-off until such a time? Without a doubt, it’ll be a warm reception for him.

All that and more tonight on AEW Rampage.
