#AndNEW: Hiroshi Tanahashi Wins NEVER Openweight Championship

Hiroshi Tanahashi

On today’s New Beginning in Nagoya event Shingo Takagi defended his NEVER Openweight Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event.  In a result that may shock some fans, Hiroshi Tanahashi won the bout and now holds the NEVER Openweight title for the first time in his storied career.

Tanahashi emerged victorious after a 35 minute battle between the two sides, ending Takagi’s second run as NEVER Openweight Champion at just 84 days.  After the match Great O-Khan attacked Tanahashi and seemingly staked his claim for the next title shot.  As you’ll know Tanahashi defeated O-Khan at WrestleKingdom but the monstrous O-Khan will not be stopped and has re-set his sights on Tanahashi immediately.

With this win Tanahashi holds the NEVER title for the first time in his career, its a new horizon for him and signifies his current spot on the card as the former Ace who can still deliver and win titles but may no longer be world champion quality.  He could help elevate the title in ways that former champions couldn’t and when he eventually loses it he will make a star, all in all this is a good decision from NJPW as it gives Tanahashi and the title a new lease on life.
