Preview: AEW DARK (6/16/20)

AEW DARK

AEW DARK returns with another huge card on Tuesday night as the promotion is set to air 11 matches featuring returning indie stars, new debuts, and continuing some of the most popular storylines from the past several weeks.

Among the 11 matches, fans can look forward to seeing Shawn Dean, Lee Johnson, Dani Jordyn, and Robert Anthony back in action, as well as the debuts of David Ali, Capital Vices, Griff Garrison, and Red Velvet. Allie and Brandi Rhodes will team together as will Brandon Cutler and Peter Avalon, looking for their first win in four attempts. Favorites like Jurassic Express, Jimmy Havoc, and Lance Archer will also be in action. It’s a jam-packed night of wrestling as AEW presents DARK episode #38.

Capital Vices (J-Sin & Money Greene) vs. Jurassic Express (Luchasaurus & Marko Stunt)

Returning to DARK for the first time since May, Jurassic Express will look to continue their winning ways of late that have seen the team win five of their last seven matches. Representing the duo on Tuesday will be Luchasaurus and Marko Stunt, who wrestled their first match as a team on the May 28th episode of DARK. Stunt and Luchasaurus worked well together in their debut and will hope to keep the momentum going against the well-established team of the Capital Vices, J-Sin and Money Greene. A team since 2017, Money and Sin have wrestled just under 40 matches together and are known for their time in MCW Pro Wrestling, NOVA Pro Wrestling, Prime Time Pro Wrestling, TRUE Wrestling, and more. The duo are also former tag team champions in Maximum Assault Wrestling, holding the belts for 118 days in 2019-20.

MUSA & Shawn Dean vs. Joey Janela & Sonny Kiss

Photo: AEW

Two DARK staples return to battle Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss, who are wrestling just their third-ever match as a tag team. Janela and Kiss first teamed up on the March 18th episode of DARK and currently have a 2-0 record in their DARK appearances. As the two continue to find success alongside each other, they’ll have another opportunity to rack up a W on Tuesday as they take on Shawn Dean and MUSA, who will be teaming together for the first time. One of DARK’s early success stories, Dean makes his return to the show for the first time since May 20th. He last wrestled for AEW on May 28th, taking on Brian Cage in Dean’s Dynamite debut.

A Chicago native, Dean, who has also wrestled for EVOLVE, Southern Underground Pro, Georgia Premier Wrestling, ACTION Wrestling, and more, will be making his seventh appearance on DARK this week and just his second in tag team action. Joining him will be a fellow trainee of QT Marshall at the Nightmare Factory in MUSA. Known mostly for his DARK appearances alongside Lee Johnson, MUSA will be making his sixth appearance on DARK, his most recent of which came last week as he teamed with Brady Pierce against Santana and Ortiz. MUSA has wrestled for New Era Wrestling, Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment, Pro Wrestling Bushido, Ohio Valley Wrestling, and more.

Dani Jordyn vs. Big Swole

AEW DARK

Returning to DARK for the first time since February, Big Swole will be in action against one of the early DARK favorites from 2020 in Dani Jordyn. Swole joined AEW in 2019 and since then, has slowly been making a name for herself in the women’s division. She’s had an up-and-down year so far but at 3-3, Swole is not that far out of the top five of the title picture. She’ll have a chance to get closer to that conversation as she takes on Jordyn, who is making her return to DARK for the first time since May 19th, where she wrestled current women’s champion Hikaru Shida. With just three years of experience under her belt, Jordyn, who has trained with both Marshall at Nightmare, and AR Fox at WWA4, first made her AEW debut in November 2019. A local in the Southern indie scene, Jordyn has also wrestled for Southern Honor Wrestling, Queens of Combat, ACTION Wrestling, NWA, and GPW among others, in her short career.

Brandon Cutler & Peter Avalon (w/ Leva Bates) vs. SCU (Frankie Kazarian & Christopher Daniels)

Photo: AEW

It’s all fun and games unless you are Peter Avalon and Brandon Cutler, who couldn’t buy a win even if one was being sold to them. On Tuesday, they’ll continue their so far failed tag team experiment, against one of the best AEW has to offer, in SCU. The story behind Cutler and Avalon combining their collective forever losing streaks into a tag team which has lost all three of their matches as a duo as well, has been such an entertaining side story that has developed on Being the Elite and DARK. Surely, these two will get a win eventually…Maybe…But Tuesday is likely not the day. This match actually marks the second time Cutler and Avalon will be facing Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian, the first of which occurred at the BTE compound in March.

Known for their time in Ring of Honor, IMPACT Wrestling, and now AEW, Daniels and Kazarian are a fantastic tag team with plenty of accolades to their name including as 4x ROH and 2x TNA tag team champs. But in AEW, they’ve not really had the chance to show off their tag prowess as SCU has mainly been represented by Kazarian and Scorpio Sky. However, in 2020, Daniels and Kazarian have been teaming together again and the two have found success in limited matches. They made their AEW debut as a duo on the March 18th episode of DARK and are now 3-0. It’s unknown how this could affect the tag rankings as Kazarian and Sky are SCU’s main unit, but another win for the former Addiction might make things interesting as far as the tag title picture goes.

David Ali vs. Lance Archer (w/ Jake “The Snake” Roberts)

AEW DARK

With just one loss to his name in his AEW career, Lance Archer has been a dominant force in the company and will continue to be so especially thanks to his alliance with Jake Roberts. Roberts and Archer have brought out the best in each other and together, they’ve put the rest of the locker room on notice that the Murderhawk is a force to be reckoned with. Archer, who last wrestled at Double or Nothing, will actually be making his DARK debut on Tuesday, doing so against David Ali, who is making his AEW debut as well. A four-year trainee of WWA4, Ali is known for his time in the Southern indie scene with promotions including SHW, ACTION Wrestling, Peachstate Wrestling Alliance, where he is a former champion, and Southern Fried Championship Wrestling, his most recent home promotion.

Skyler Moore vs. Penelope Ford (w/ Kip Sabian)

Photo: AEW

Penelope Ford has been enjoying a great year in 2020 with real-life fiancee Kip Sabian by her side. While her record is just 3-3, Ford is actually ranked fifth overall in the AEW women’s rankings as she’s continuing a climb toward the top as part of this most recent push. Still relatively green herself with just six years experience under her belt, Ford, a CZW Dojo trainee, has been improving both in-ring and with her character over the past year. Currently undefeated in DARK action, Ford will look for another win on Tuesday against Skyler Moore, who is returning to AEW for the third time this year and the first time since May. Trained by the 3D Academy, Moore is known for her time in IGNITE Wrestling, GO Wrestle, and more. She also took part in a WWE tryout in April 2019, as she’s a name to continue to watch as her career progresses.

Robert Anthony vs. Scorpio Sky

AEW DARK

Primarily known for his teaming alongside Kazarian in SCU, Scorpio Sky is set for a rare AEW singles match (just his third in his career) as he’ll take on Robert Anthony, who is returning to DARK for the second week in a row after his stellar performance against Jon Moxley on last week’s show. Both Sky and Anthony are longtime veterans of the wrestling industry but with Anthony working mainly the East Coast/Midwest and Sky the West Coast, the two have never met in a ring before save for this week. While Sky has primarily wrestled in tag team action in AEW, he did have a championship opportunity against Chris Jericho last year and could find himself in line for one against Cody Rhodes for the TNT title soon enough.

In the meantime, he’ll face a tough task against Anthony, who has shown in his two prior AEW DARK appearances that he’s willing to leave it all on the table. Wrestling now for 18+ years, both of Anthony’s DARK matches lasted over 10 minutes, including most notably last week, when he and Moxley fought a rematch fitting of their encounters from CZW a decade ago. A former developmental wrestler in Florida Championship Wrestling, Anthony is primarily known for his time in AAW, IWA Mid South, CZW and most recently, as a regular for Freelance Wrestling. Anthony has also wrestled for Ring of Honor, IMPACT, and WWE. In his career, Anthony – who also wrestled as Egotistico Fantastico – is a former 14x champion with reigns as AAW Heavyweight and CZW World Heavyweight Champion under his belt. He is also a former winner of the International Wrestling Cartel’s Super Indy X and CZW’s Best of the Best 9 tournaments.

Griff Garrison vs. Jimmy Havoc

Photo: AEW

Undefeated on DARK this year (7-0), one half of the SuperBad Death Squad, Jimmy Havoc is returning to singles action in AEW for the first time since he defeated Luther on May 6th and will be in action for the first time period since losing a tag team title match against the Elite on May 28th. He’ll be looking to keep his perfect DARK record intact against the up-and-coming Griff Garrison, who is making his AEW debut. Just a three-year pro, Garrison, the “Ivy League MVP,” is another Southern indie staple who is known for his time in SFCW, Anarchy Wrestling, and ROH, where he took part in several TV tapings alongside Marcus Kross as The Master and the Machine. Perhaps someone ROH was looking to sign before the pandemic hit, Garrison is an exciting young wrestler. He’ll look to show that on Tuesday against the veteran prowess and mean streak of Havoc, who has been on a roll in AEW in 2020.

Red Velvet & Kenzie Page vs. Allie & Brandi Rhodes (w/ QT Marshall & Dustin Rhodes)

AEW DARK

Second only to that of Cutler and Avalon, the DARK developing story of the Natural Nightmares and Allie has been quite the centerpiece for AEW’s Tuesday night program. As Marshall has gotten closer to Allie, both Brandi Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes have tried to hide their displeasure at the budding relationship between the Bunny and her ‘Cu-tie.’ The likelihood these two can stay on the same page is slim to none as this will be their first time wrestling together and the first match overall for Allie since the Jericho Cruise in January, and the first for Rhodes in the same span. That means neither woman has wrestled in close to five months suggesting there is sure to be some ring rust there, as well as possible distrust and of course, the distractions present at ringside with both Dustin Rhodes and Marshall cornering the pair.

That said, the two will have a great chance to grab the victory as they take on the debuting team of Red Velvet and Kenzie Page. A four year pro out of Florida, Velvet is known for her time in Fighting Evolution Wrestling, as well as Shine and World Wrestling Network where she worked a few shows in 2018. Her partner, who is very new to the wrestling scene, is the 18-year-old Kenzie Page, who recently finished her training at Glenn Jacobs’ JP Wrestling Academy. Tuesday actually marks Page’s return to AEW as she wrestled Nyla Rose on Dynamite in May.

Brady Pierce & John Skyler vs. Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson)

Photo: AEW

With a new member under their wings, the Dark Order will look to continue their recent winning ways as Stu Grayson and Evil Uno are set to wrestle their first match since March 2020. 5-1 in 2020, including a perfect 4-0 on DARK, they’ll face the duo of Brady Pierce and John Skyler, who are returning to AEW as a team for the second time, after facing Janela and Kiss on May 26th. The 28-year-old Pierce, out of South Carolina, has been wrestling for nine years for companies including Premiere Wrestling Xperience, Resistance Pro Wrestling, WrestleForce, ECWA, Pro Wrestling BUSHIDO and recently, SHW. Also wrestling out of South Carolina, Skyler is a staple with PWX and has also wrestled for CWF, ROH, NJPW, MCW Pro Wrestling, House of Hardcore, IMPACT Wrestling, Anarchy Wrestling, Pro Wrestling EVO and more. With 16 titles to his name and a career dating back 10 years, Skyler is certainly a well-known name in the Southern indie scene where he’s both competed against and teamed with Pierce.

Lee Johnson vs. Shawn Spears (w/ Tully Blanchard)

AEW DARK

Back in action for the first time since losing to Dustin Rhodes at Double or Nothing, Shawn Spears will look to get back to his winning ways as he has won five of his last seven matches in AEW. Alongside Tully Blanchard, Spears has found recent success but he’s yet to find his perfect tag team partner. That may be on hold for the time being but there is no doubt Spears will want to continue to show off on DARK, where he is undefeated in singles action but winless in tag team action on the year. His opponent is likely to be the next Nightmare wrestler AEW adds to the roster as Lee Johnson has been one of the most featured indie wrestlers on DARK this year. Set to make his 10th AEW appearance on Tuesday, having wrestled both on DARK and Dynamite, Johnson is certainly an exciting young prospect who AEW has their eyes on. Trained by Marshall at Nightmare, Johnson has also made appearances for Absolute Intense Wrestling, IWA-MS, World Wrestling Network, and more. He’s received praise from his matches thus far and has really stepped up and made the most of his opportunity.
