WWE fans were understandably taken aback when it was announced that the legendary wrestler Rey Mysterio would have his retirement ceremony on the June 1st edition of Monday Night RAW. Some Latin news sources have even reported on the announcement as if it were legitimate.

But, in an update WWE confirmed that the “Monday Night Messiah” Seth Rollins will be hosting Mysterio’s ceremony leading to many believing that the legendary superstar’s retirement ceremony is in fact a work.
Given the fact that Seth Rollins is the kayfabe reason for Rey Mysterio’s current injury, for those unaware Rollins snapped during a tag team match and destroyed Mysterio’s eye against the steel steps at ringside, this is likely an angle to further Rollins’ messiah character. It fits in with Rollins’ current cult leader-esque character to host such a ceremony as he believes that Rey Mysterio made a “sacrifice” to help Rollins snap out of his funk.
With rumours that Mysterio’s contract is up, it will be interesting to see if Mysterio makes his comeback to confront Rollins himself or if someone else stands up to Rollins on behalf of Rey Mysterio, like maybe his trained son Dominic.
