Preview: DDT TV Show Episode #1 (5/2/20)

DDT TV Show Episode 1

Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) announced the concept of a DDT TV Show to make up for canceled shows earlier in the month. These No-People shows were delayed due to being unable to find a venue as the COVID pandemic caused more venues to not be viable for wrestling. Now the company finds themself in a strange position as Peter Pan at Saitama Super Arena has found itself postponed. This has already come with some consequences, as seen with the first DDT TV Show which will be seen on Saturday on DDT Universe.

Yoshihiko vs Yuki Iino

The first match we’ll be seeing from DDT TV Show is a YOSHIHIKO match, which is appropriate in a sense. YOSHIHIKO is one of the main names thought of when the company is brought up for better or for worse. They’ll be going up against ALL OUT’s Yuki Iino who has been putting on impressive matches taking on names like HARASHIMA for the KO-D title and Chihiro Hashimoto. It’s a match of veteran vs up and coming talent that’s going to set the tone of this show.

Konosuke Takeshita vs Naomi Yoshimura vs MAO

Three of the most athletically gifted members of the DDT roster are going to square off in a triple threat match. While that on paper would be enough, there’s some interesting tidbits beyond that. Naomi Yoshimura is one-half of the current KO-D tag champions in Nautilus which paints a target on his back. However, compared to Takeshita and MAO, Yoshimura’s 2020 has been amazing and it seems like nothing can stop him. An athletic contest to keep an eye on between young talents.

HARASHIMA/Pokotan vs Neo Itoh Respect Army (Chris Brookes and Maki Itoh)

The rise of Maki Itoh from being Tokyo Joshi Pro exclusive to a figure that doesn’t seem too far-fetched in the context of the DDT Roster has been a very interesting experience. Though the Neo Itoh Respect Army of Chris Brookes and Maki Itoh is a common team to hear about thanks to their popularity online. The last time Chris Brookes was in a major match he lost the Universal Championship to Daisuke Sasaki. Now the Respect Army is against HARASHIMA and another mascot of DDT in Pokotan. Will it be silly? Most likely, but with that being said it’s definitely interesting that the pairing of Brookes and Itoh are being brought forward more. They almost seem like the bigger deal than their opponents.

Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship: Danshoku Dino (c) vs Akito

So the title that’s being defended at all times is being contested in a one on one match. It’s not the first time that DDT has done this. Like all things this pandemic has caused more outside of the box thinking when it comes to this 24/7 title. The best example being how Danshoku Dino won the title in the youtube exclusive match against Toru Owashi. So to predict how something like this will go down especially with Akito who shined in the Extreme Division is impossible. Anything could really happen and that’s kind of the beauty of this title as shown by the fact that if the title changes hands the holder will be the 1480th champion.

DDT Universal Championship: Daisuke Sasaki (c) vs Antonio Honda

The second champion making his first defense. It’s been a rough beginning for the Universal title, the belt’s purpose was meant to be a touring title for any matches that occurred outside of the promotion. For obvious reasons that’s not become much of an option. While Daisuke Sasaki holds the title, it does give a bit of prestige to it as he is a former KO-D champion. And he is challenged by someone more in the comedy side of things in Antonio Honda. This match is one to watch. Sasaki’s reign is going to show where on the totem pole the belt is going to end up in the eyes of DDT and the audience. For the match itself, it’s between two charisma machines, it’ll be fun if a little crazy.

Right to Challenge Sword Match: Tetsuya Endo (holder) vs Kazusada Higuchi

This is the big change, the sword when it was introduced guaranteed a shot at the KO-D Openweight title at Saitama Super Arena and could not be cashed in. Now that the show is postponed the rules of the sword are suspended and it acts as a normal gauntlet. Tetsuya Endo is the current holder but facing off against Eruption‘s Kazusada Higuchi. Higuchi and his Eruption teammate Yukio Sakaguchi promised to control the main event. With Sakaguchi winning the KO-D Openweight title and Higuchi winning the Sword.

Higuchi has all the tools to do this. He’s a powerhouse and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since the formation of Eruption. But, Endo is no stranger to the pressure of main events and has a whole bag of tricks thanks to the DAMNHEARTS stable. This match will be a good look at the new and improved Higuchi, who despite his long tenure in DDT hasn’t had much of a spotlight.
