Matt Cardona (Zack Ryder) Teases Return of Internet Championship

Matt Cardona, better known to the WWE Universe as Zack Ryder, was a casualty of Black Wednesday a few weeks back that saw a huge set of releases in cost-cutting measures. Cardona was one of WWE’s most popular Superstars for over a decade, with a strong and devoted cult following built with his groundbreaking use of Social Media in their early existence. And it appears that Cardona is teasing the return of the Internet Championship, posting a photo of a newly designed belt with similar markings.

The teaser reveal comes just days after Matt Cardona filed trademarks with the US Patent & Trademark Office for his hashtag #AlwayzReady and the term “Internet Champion”. As Zack Ryder, he debuted the Internet Championship in May of 2011 on his YouTube series, Z! True Long Island Story, which helped create a cult-following within the WWE Universe. While it was recognized on WWE television, it was never officially sanctioned as a proper title and no title defenses occurred on WWE television. While WWE does not acknowledge Zack Ryder as an official Internet Champion, he did leave the WWE as a former WWE Intercontinental Champion, WWE United States Champion, and 2x WWE Tag Team Champion (both with Curt Hawkins). Now that Matt Cardona is free from WWE, his title could become something he takes on the road as he re-debuts in the indie circuit, defending online on streaming services like IWTV or Powerslam.
